Shelf life of promacta was created by EmilyK
Well, I am back on the treatment train. Anyone know the shelf life of promacta? I don't see it on the promacta info site. I have one bottle that says it "expires" in 12 months and the other one says 2 years. My doctor and I agreed I would start the promacta again, but now realize my pills are from 2015. I am not sure if "expires" means less potent or harmful. If anyone know the answer I would be greatful. I will ask the doctor for a new prescription tomorrow but then it will be several days before it arrives. Thanks. Emily

Emily - can you call the pharmacist? I usually ask mine if I have a question like that. I just asked about expired Benadryl the other day and she told me it should still be good but the worry is bacteria with that drug when it expires. Sorry you're back to treating!

Thanks Sandi. My local pharmacy has no idea and the specialty pharmacy is closed. I will check with them tomorrow and check back to let everyone know what they say. I just wanted to start treating as soon as possible so I do not keep dropping. New bruising each day. Hopefully once I get back on Promacta things will get better. At least I am rational and not having prednisone induced psychosis!

You were always rational, just scared. Let us know how it goes.

Sorry to hear that Emily.
Picked up new prescription a couple of weeks ago, all the boxes last at least 2 years from when I got them. The blister strips have the expiry date on them but I suppose if you are getting your pills in bottles it may be different.

hi Emily- I had a similar situation the last time I went back on Promacta, except my bottle had actually expired two months earlier. I asked my hematologist and he said sometimes the drugs become less potent but they will usually go past the date. So I used up that old bottle while waiting for the new prescription. I don't know if a pharmacist would approve but for me it worked fine, no problems as I recall. And it started my counts heading up from <10. I usually respond with side effects right away for a few days, and then counts improve within about a week.

Yes, if you can avoid prednisone that would be great! I took 7.5mg yesterday for another autoimmune/inflammation thing. I hadn't had any for over a year. omg even with that low dose I was eating everything in sight! My dinner lasted all evening. haha I was reminded how prednisone makes me crazy!

Thanks for the responses. I talked to the pharmacist and he said that he could not find anything that would suggest a toxicity issue, just a loss of potency over time. Of course, he was clear that he couldn't recommend that I take expired drugs. I will continue to use what I have until the new batch comes in. Right now just some ugly and odd bruising but hopefully I can avoid those annoying nose bleeds in the meantime.
