CAN ANYONE OFFER SUGGESTIONS ON GETTING LAB WORK DONE WHEN TRAVELLING IN EUROPE? AS A NEWBIE, I THOUGHT I WOULD BE OFF OF PREDNISONE AFTER FIVE MONTHS..... THE TRIP IS AROUND THE CORNER AND STILL AM BEING TAPERED OFF THE MEDS WITH WEEKLY LABS. I AM GUESSING THAT I WOULD NEED A PRESCRIPTION FOR LABS?
ANY SUPPORT IS APPRECIATED.

Hi Sandi,
This is my first ITP experience. My lowest platelet count was 11,000 in March and I started at 60mg prednisone, reaching a high of 170,000. Slow tapering began with changes made every 7-10 days. Currently at 10mg Prednisone, with a platelet count of 103,000. I was actually at 7.5 mg Prednisone the week prior with a platelet count of 159,000, then a setback to have to increase my dose.
We will be gone for 4 weeks; France, Switzerland and northern Italy with access to either hospitals or clinics.
Thanks Sandi, for your support.

Have you spoken to your doctor about it? You might be able to get by with a stable count if the steroids were bumped up a bit.

  • For 7 months, platelets crashed (as low as 1,000) every 10 days between IVIG treatments. I got cured 10/2017 after taking parasite destroying medicine and Rife US tx.

You may already know this but you can check the web for platelet disorder associations and contact names in other countries. I found one in Norway for example. I too am embarking on a trip from Colorado to Ireland and although it is a short trip it is stressful worrying about platelets staying in the safe range. Safe travels! Cindy

My opinion is Prednisone did not work for me so during that time would have never traveled.

Now with Nplate I have done two international trips with 10 days duration each.

Worse thing you can do is get hospitalized in acountry with no insurance.

I had a wonderful 5 week trip without any symptoms, so no labs were done.
But now that I am home, on Wednesday my platelets were at 40k without any bruising. I encourage my doc to wait and see, so now repeat labs on Monday, still no physical symptoms.
I have a 2nd opinion appointment coming up 10/3 with Dr. Liebman.
From reading other threads, I am happy to do nothing as long as my platelets stay above 30k. But just in case tomorrow's labs drop below 30k, please advise if you can, as I wish Dr L's appointment was sooner!
