I was diagnosed this past October. Prior to my diagnosis I was very active. I ran 6 days a week and participated in Kickboxing and Jujitsu. (I heard often in the ER how lucky I was I didn't end up in their trauma room). I am getting used to the idea of giving up those sports But my question is, do any of you ski? How do you manage it? The #’s can change so fast, but it is the only sport my husband and I do together!

Any tips for Training with ITP? I am thinking I will take up Yoga, I can’t think of to many issues will arise from Yoga!

You don't always have to give up sports when you have ITP. There are some options to get counts up to a safe number, and when counts are high enough, go for it! Many people also go into remission and when that happens, life can be normal again.

What Sandi said! What are your counts? We have people here who got a diagnosis with counts others of us would kill for. So for example if you are typically over 70 I wouldn't worry. If over 50 and not a bleeder, I think it's worth considering as likely safe. Below that, with your vigorous high contact activities, talk it over with doctor? Erica

And she was!
Diagnosed May 2005, lowest count 8K.
4/22/08: 43K (2nd Rituxan)
10/01/09: 246K, 1/8/10: 111K, 5/21/10: 233K
Latest count: 7/27/2015: 194K

With skiing, I would advise a helmet. (But I'd recommend that for everyone for skiing, especially clumsy me, who once learned the hard way, with lots of bruises, that you can hurt your head if you veer off course.) At high altitudes, you may find nosebleeds a nuisance, but not all ITP patients have nosebleed issues. (I'm not a patient, btw, just a mom of a former ITP teen.)

My personal opinion:

1. Jujitsu: I would think you could continue with the exercises. Fighting someone or breaking something counts above 80 and if you don't bruise easy.

2. kickboxing: I would think the answer is no unless your numbers are above 80 and if you don't bruise easy.

3. skiing: cross country no issues. Down hill I would think numbers should be above 80 and if you don't bruise easy. I like the idea of a helmet due to the speeds you can get to.

Greetings everyone :) new member here

I think this is the kind of problem I have too, I like to go to the gym and lift heavy or sometimes lift long (more reps).

For the pass year (2016) I was doing okay with no symptoms or anything, just an occasional nose bleed no more than one day and I was okay. But for the past three months I was struggling (stressing) over my thesis for my degree, and still going to the gym 6 times a week, like the usual.

But after I was just finished my thesis, just a week later after that, my body just went into the worst fever I've ever had, I can't move my body at that time and I rushed to the emergency room, with my platelet on the 11.000 mark (I have much worst number when I was a teenager).

My question, is it the stress? or the weight lifting?

Probably whatever you had that caused the fever. Illnesses can often cause counts to plummet. Stress can indirectly cause vulnerability to illnesses, so my guess is the combination of those. :)

I had similar issues....my counts tend to be less than 10 on and off but often much better on nplate so I alter my workouts based on my symptoms and Cbc. If I'm less than ten I concentrate on yoga like things/stretching and take care never to be upside down (no head stands or even prolonged downward dog). between 10-30 I pretty do a normal gym workout and avoid things that might involve falling from a distance ( no leg raises on suspended rings etc). Above 30 I do whatever- this has worked well for me

when counts are low I occasionally get more bruises on whatever I worked on that day but nothing serious or too bothersome. I haven't gone skiing but probably wouldn't below 50-

Hope that was helpful- keep I mind these are totally made up guidelines that I have no evidence for except my own experience!

I always wear a helmet, everyone should! Thanks for the info on the nosebleeds, now I won't panic if I get one on the lift!

This is a great question-

Before ITP I ran for 30minutes and did 30 minutes HIIT during weekdays.
Some studies have said marathon type endurance exercise is not good but I have experienced no change in numbers.

I have changed my workout to include more strength training for 40 minutes and 20 minutes of stair master.
Theory is IL-6 is produced more in the skeletal muscular system and and can help more TPO production.
