I was browsing the medical news site MedicalNewsToday.com this morning and saw this article on thrombocytopenia ( www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/314123.php ). Much of the information is less than accurate, and some of it is wrong. Maybe I'm being picky, but I thought I should mention it.

Though I'm always pleased when ITP gets any media attention at all, I'd like it to be as accurate as possible.

  • ITP since 2014. Retired nurse. My belief is empower patients to be involved as much as possible in their care. Read, read, read & ALWAYS question medics about the evidence base they use.

For instance:

"The internal clotting that occurs causes lots of platelets to be used up."

Further, the drug list characterizes acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and naproxen causing low platelet counts (NSAIDs alter platelet function, irreversibly in the case of aspirin).

There was no mention of antibody testing for ITP, nor the value of seeing an experienced hematologist for diagnosis and treatment.

But like I said, maybe I'm being picky.

I found it to be a very antiquated, generic article. It certainly wouldn't be any help for anyone recently diagnosed.

AOI, you aren't being picky!

"The internal clotting that occurs causes lots of platelets to be used up."
This would apply to TTP, not ITP! But TTP is not even included as a cause of thrombocytopenia.

I also found that it mentioned

"Cases of ITP that do not respond after a year may be treated with surgery to remove the spleen. Emergency cases can be treated with a transfusion of platelets."

I don't believe that to be the case is most instances.

The article also did not mention any of the TPO's as treatment.

And this is why you should take pretty much everything you read on the internet with a grain of salt. Look at the credentials of the author of this article, and what other topics he has written about....

Yes we need to be careful about articles. They should be reviewed by at least 2 peers. Meaning written by a doctor reviewed by 2 doctors.

Didn't say anything there that this man was a doctor said he studied medical science and is currently studying for his MSc here in Canada that would be Masters of Science. So one step above a bachelors but no where near doctor status.

I sent 2 corrections/ complaints about miss information to that site.

Julia, you may want to send a copy to the MD who supposedly reviewed the article, Suzanne Falck, MD.
She may not even know what she is lending her credentials to!
She is on the faculty at University of Illinois at Chicago.
