Could i file for Disability ?? was created by Taye97
Hi everyone. I am here because i am seeking more information on the ITP situation. I was diagnosed when i was a sophomore in high school now i am a freshman in college. My insurance would cover my medical expenses until I turned 19, but the problem is that i just turned 19 on October 20th of this year. I would like to know if anyone has ever had to file for disability to cover any expenses because my platelets drop pretty fast. From 115,000 one day to 2,000 the next day. The student health center charges $25 to run a CPC and $8 for each tube of blood that is taken. In order for me to get treatments for my ITP, i have to have blood drawn. Please help because im in a needy situation.

Where are you located? As a 19 yo college student can you qualify for government insurance (Family care? Medicaid)? Many colleges offer low cost insurance programs. I would suggest you go to the Social Services Office (I think they are by county, at least that is how they are in NJ)and see what you could qualify for, but I would suggest that you do a little research first so you are a little informed before you speak to them.

Disability is very hard to get for ITP. Here are the requirements:

Filing for Social Security Disability with a Chronic Thrombocytopenia Diagnosis

The Social Security Administration (SSA) discusses disorders of the blood and circulatory system under Section 7.00 Hematological Disorders, and defines “chronic” as lasting at least three months. You must have been examined at least twice in that three-month period. Chronic Thrombocytopenia, regardless of the cause, is considered under Section 7.06. To meet the requirements of this listing, you must have a platelet count that is repeatedly below 40,000 AND have at least one of the following symptoms: at least one spontaneous hemorrhage which required transfusion within five months prior to filing for disability benefits OR you must have had intracranial bleeding within twelve months prior to filing for disability benefits.

It doesn't seem like you need disability; it seems like you need help paying for what your insurance doesn't cover. Is there a clinic nearby where you can have labs drawn?

I have had an transfusion a little before my birthday in October and my platelet count is usually below 20,000 when they do labs. I've talked to my hematologist about this situation and he said that he thinks that i should file for disability because it could actually help in a way.

I am located in Mississippi. My mom and I are trying to do something quick about the situation because I've just found out that my platelets are low again but my insurance is gone. I have no way of seeing how low they are, but usually when i have petichia on my arms i know that they are pretty low. When i get bruises, they tend to be below 5,000.

The problem with disability is that at the least, it takes 6 months until you see any money. That's IF you are approved. If you are not approved, it could take years of fighting it. You'd need a lawyer. Once a person is approved, there is a one year waiting period until you are eligible for Medicare (health insurance).

Disability is very hard to get and it usually requires a work history. You only get what you have paid into it. I just went through the process four years ago. Not for ITP though, I have Lupus.

If treatment brings your counts up, you probably wouldn't be approved.
