  • My son was diagnosed with ITP in 2013 at the age of 6. He's had win-rho, ivig, rituximab, steroids, promacta, and 6-MP. We are currently on a plant-based diet which we started September 2016. We're trying to avoid a spleenectomy.

It is 100% this diet! We have been desperately battling this for over three years now. We've been through hell and back, just like many of you have. We've never had a response like this, ever! I wish you could hear the emotional in my voice. This morning when I got the results I cried. I know we're not in the clear yet, but I finally, for the first time in a long time, have some hope. So far, each month we're seeing improvement. This consistent improvement is also something new to us. My son's platelets love to be in the single digits, until recently.

Owen is lucky to have a mom so clued in and willing to think outside the mainstream medical paradigm. I don't want others to go through this torture if they don't have to. Thanks to this forum I'm now motivated to do some more videos and keep pushing on.

I just wanted to thank you wquine for sharing your story! I had been trying to do better on the eating front, but you encouraged me to give AIP (with eggs, can't quite let those go yet!) a go for managing things.

I'm on day 5 and feeling pretty good and losing some weight, so hopefully I can stick with this for a bit. If nothing else, it's a good diet to improve my overall health. If I get any positive platelet responses, that will just be gravy.

I look forward to hearing about more positive results from you :) Maybe I'll get lucky and can add a few of my own, lol!

So happy for you, Owensmom! I believe in diet changes and I believe in coincidence, but whatever it is, improvement is great!

Just read this, I really hope that you post back something positive and support/motivate each other. I'm sure you'll be more disciplined than me!! :)

Hey Owensmom. I'm doing a little 'less meat' experiment myself. About the meats that Owen cut from his diet. What were the one or two main meats that he cut out of his diet? That is, the meats he used to eat a lot of.

Hal9000 and all,
I now, more than ever, believe in this diet. I got discouraged a couple months ago because we had a bit of a regression, but he ended up having a cold. That usually drops his platelets fast. However, his last blood test was the best ever! We are still seeing continued improvement. Best of all, our doctor is on board. She even tried the diet!
To answer your question, we cut all meats, all dairy, and all oil(yes no oil of any kind). If i were to recommend one thing for you to remove from your diet, i would say dairy is the worst. If you're going to try it, then it is all or nothing in my opinion. No cheese, sour cream, yogurt, or milk. Its not as bad as you think. I dont miss it and I'll never go back. It's always hard to make a change, but I've learned to substitute other things for the places where i miss dairy, (or meat, or oil). I strongly recommend you watch some documentaries. They are very powerfu and full of info. Start with "Fork over knives: the documentary". Then "Fat, sick, and nearly dead". They might just change your life. In fact, I'd challenge you to try the plant-based diet for 30 days. You can always go back, but you might like how you feel. Good luck to you in whatever you try.

What are his counts? I'm so happy for you! For many years, I did not believe that diet played a part in any of this. Since I started researching and doing it myself, I believe that it can. Maybe not for everyone, but when you discover what certain foods or things like sugar do to the body, you start to be a believer.

Since September Owen has been getting ivig treatments. Before that, we were mostly winrho. Pre-vegan, Owen's treatments would only last 4 weeks at best. The medication is only suppose to be in his system for four weeks. He would start in the high 200's three days after a treatment and drop fast. Maybe he would be in the 80's or 50's by week 2. By week 4 he would be in the teens or single digits. This time of year is usually our most challenging for some reason. For the past three years we have not been able to go more than two or three weeks without a treatment between March and April. Since December he has been averaging about 5 weeks between treatments. It seems to be slowly spacing itself out. His numbers are also staying up higher for longer. At week two in this last round he was at 160. He was in normal range for more than two weeks! This is exciting to us. His numbers also seem to stabilize when they drop lower. Before, each week the numbers would drop somewhat drastically, but now he'll hang at 30 for 2-3 weeks. Also, since going vegan, after a treatment his numbers go up higher than before. Often he'll be in the high 300's after the third day. I don't blame the higher starting counts on his better results, because we've gone from 300 to 30 in one week in the past.
