So I've had Itp for 13 years, I'm now 30. Along those years I've been as low as 0 with only a little petechiae. I don't show symptoms all the time. My major indicator is the Petechiae in the mouth or a period that won't stop. I am on nplate but counts all over the place anyway I was at 5 last week and my doctor told me to go to the er. I hate the hospital no I despise it lol. I didn't go and he came in the next week now platelets 11 and proceeded to tell
Me he could lose his license because I didn't go. Started asking what I was going to do when I stroked out because of petechiae on my brain I'm just a little confused isn't this my decision?

I'm on my 3rd doctor and I love her she is awesome. I don't go to the er also because it's like show and tell and most if the time they don't know what to do. I would think about changing doctors and he can't lose his license. It was you choice not to go, if u went and didn't admit you then the hospital and doctors are responsible.

I totally agree with amber about the license. If he documented his recommendation, he is not responsible for making you comply. So your doctor is lying to you to get you to do something you don't want to do.

You have the right to refuse any treatment. As long as the options are presented to you and documented the doctor is in no legal danger. If a parent refuses treatment for a minor child it can be problematic but not for an adult. I do believe the doctor can refuse to provide medical care if you refuse aspects of treatment.

My daughters ITP and has shown me thought that the treatment protocols vary widely. In general I believe doctors tend to "overtreat" medical issues and older ITP protocols call for aggressive treatment of low counts. I am so glad that her doctor presented all the options and allowed us to make a decisions ... the only time he was pretty firm was when she had GI bleeding. I was not declining treatment at all but I said something to her like "what do you think about this, are you ok with it." It was rhetorical but the doctor took it literally and started with "this is really serious, you need to take care of it, she could have alot of complications...". I wasn't really giving her a choice I realized the potential for danger. I am really worried about her having to switch to an adult hematologist because her doctor is so low key.

I can honestly say for 7-10 days before her bleeding her bruising change to much darker black bruises and she had petechiae in her mouth. Her counts had been under 5 for at least 5 months so now she would know the changes that could be problematic.

Keli:

The others are right. He won't lose his license if you refuse to go to the ER. Many patients don't do everything their doctors ask. None of them would have a license if that were true!

Question - if you went to the ER, what would they do?

Keli, Although he won't lose his license, he might lose his patience. It is a possibility that your doctor will fire you as a patient if you refuse to follow his instructions. I mention that as a possibility since you said you have used up all your other options.

If you are concerned about this, then next time you might try being direct with him, as in: "I don't see the point in going to the ER. If I don't go, do you intend to fire me as a patient?"

Your Dr. should be used to you by now. He knows that it's difficult to get your numbers up. IVIG doesn't do much for you anyway, right?

Goodness, girl! Good thing you didn't get IVIG. I'd tell that to the Dr. the next time he hassles you. That happens to you quite a bit. When was your last N-Plate injection?
