Apple Cider Vinegar safety with ITP? was created by Lady Elly
Has anyone taken Organic Apple Cider Vinegar and the safety of it with ITP?

This week I had a physical and my cholesterol was nearly 300, LDL 200, triglycerides 205.

Since being diagnosed with ITP over 6 years ago, I can not take Omega 3 which keep my Cholesterol at around 200, triglycerides 100, and LDL 130's. The doctor said Omega 3 will thin blood and is not safe with ITP.

I am not sure if Organic Apple Cider Vinegar is safe with I.T.P., but I know I must do something since the Cholesterol and Triglycerides are increasing at a rapid rate.

Also, I have a lot of stomach problems.

If you have any experience or suggestions, I would appreciate your thoughts on this topic.

Thank you.

What is your HDL?

Are you watching your sat fat intake? A lot of sat fat should be avoided - can't recall the amount one should have a day, but that could depend on who you are.

Trans fat - never should eat anything with trans fat in it.

Have you been referred to a dietician?

I don't know how ACV affects ITP, but I've been drinking it as well for high cholesterol and pre-diabetes. I'd been hearing about ACV benefits for years and laughed at the thought. I went to my local organic store and was surprised that they sell ACV and honey drinks in a bottle. I bought some and it actually tastes good. Since then, I've researched it more and now believe some of the claims. Let me know how you do.

How are your platelet counts?
I haven't given up my fish oil, unless my count falls below 50 or I have lots of obvious signs of ITP. Lately these days, my count is excessively high (for someone in NPlate treatment); so for clot prevention, I'm careful NOT to miss a fish oil dose. Omega 3 doesn't decrease platelet count, it only affects stickiness. Sometimes, you still need that with lower-than-normal but safe counts.

Hi Melinda,
My HDL was 55.
We go out a lot to fast food places and I am sure the food is loaded with saturated fat and possibly trans fat.
No, I have never seen a dietician as the doctor the doctor said that the insurance often will not pay to see one these days.

Thank you for your suggestions.

Hi Sandy,

I only started on the Bragg Organic Apple Cider Vinegar a couple days ago out of desperation to do anything to bring my cholesterol and triglycerides down.

How much are you taking per day? I am taking 2 tsp. In 10 oz of water twice a day. I read that a straw should be used as the vinegar can ruin the enemal on teeth. I have not used a straw yet, but should.

My brother had high cholesterol and triglycerides and had a stroke to brain. It left him partially blind along with other major problems.

Thank you for your input.

My platelets are under 10k most of the time since I came down with I.T.P. Over 6 years ago. Very rarely have they been in the 20's. I have them checked approximately 8 to 10 times per year.

If my platelets were above 50k, I would take Omega 3 as I know it really helped bring my cholerterol down when my platelets were normal.

If I knew that I could safely take Omega 3 with platelet count under 10k, I would do so. Actually, I don't know if ACV is real safe with platelet count below 10k. I am not sure what stickiness is and the affects on blood count.

Thank you.

I'm not really measuring how much I consume. I use about 2 to 3 teaspoons in salads and use the AVC and honey mixed in with a glass of water and some pineapple juice ice cubes.

Your HDL is real good so that's a plus. Can understand though with the other #s why you want to take action. Your doctor should check with your insurance to see if a visit to the dietician is covered - and you could contact them too to ask. Was just thinking that a dietician can help with foods to avoid and those that help.

A number of years ago I was taking a multi-vitamin - the veins in my fingers would break and the area would turn black & blue. My MD said to stop taking the multi because of the E in it, I did and those breaks have stopped.

I can't imagine the apple cider vinegar would be bad for us - but I don't know.

Good luck bringing those #s down!

Sandy,

How is your cholesterol since taking the ACV and honey? I quit taking it until this week and started the ACV & raw honey. I was told to use local raw honey, so had to wait until the famer's market opened this spring. I hope it will help with the high levels of cholesterol and stomach problems.

Youtube.com has a lot of information on ACV & honey benefits.

I plan to take the ACV & honey for several months before checking the Lipid levels.

Let me know if you have had good results. Thanks.

I have not had it tested. I need to follow up with quite a few tests but have not had the opportunity yet due to family matters. It's on my list.

I bought some raw honey but haven't tried it yet. I'm behind on everything.

Hi Sandi,
Have you had your Cholestrol checked yet. I saw a Cardiologist-Lipid doctor a few days ago. Had a Lipid test and my Cholestrol was down from 295 to 250----45 pts down. My LDL was down from 195 to 171---24 pts down. My triglycerides was down from 205 to 125---80 pts down. My glucose down from 104 to 79----25 pts down.

I had taken 1 tsp of Bragg's ACV and 1 tsp of raw local honey in 8 oz water once a day for 3 weeks. Than I quit taking it for a week prior to test. I was very surprised that the counts were down. However, I still have a long ways to go in order to get the overall Cholestrol and LDL down.

I had stopped the ACV prior to test due to platelet count being at 5k and lots of bruising. However, I am going to continue taking it if I don't have anymore problems. Most of the time my platelets run at 10k or below. Can't seem to get them up.

I realize this is over five years old, but wanted to reply anyway. Yes, going out to eat will run you with too many calories in one sitting, too much sodium in one sitting, too much fat and too much sugar in one sitting. Have you ever heard of Trim Healthy Mama? They have phenomenal recipes, drinks, desserts, entrees, etc that are normal food but healthy. You could check out their facebook page to see the amazing changes in people. It is good that your HDL number is higher as that protects your heart. But your other numbers are super high. I think you will find lowering your sodium intake (not eating out) and removing added sugar from your diet will do your numbers wonders. Those two things are often overlooked and people automatically assume it is all fat that is the problem. Good luck. By the way, did you ever learn if ACV helps with platelets? I have ITP (and cancer) and I've added a yummy drink from Trim Healthy Mama that has ACV in it and then I wondered if it would be safe or not. Thank you.
