It has been over 4 years since my splenectomy. And although I do enjoy being Free of prednisone and infusion rooms. I find myself regretting my splenectomy. I am sick of being sick. Within the past 8 months or so I have had strep throat twice, multiple colds, UTIs, BV constantly, and I am now trying to get over influenza B. I was in bed for 6 days and two weeks later I'm now suffering from an ear infection and possible sinus infection. I hate what this splenectomy has done to me. I am constantly battling something. I'm sick of antibiotics that make me sick. I just want to be healthy. Has anyone else dealt with this? What have you done to stay healthy? I'm so frustrated and hating myself for making such a big life changing decision so blindly. I didn't know how much it change the rest of my life. Are there any supplements out there to help build up my immune system. I'm 28 with two littles, I really need to be healthy.

Welcome, Mylola. I had my splenectomy in 2006 and haven't been through any of what you are describing. I haven't done anything different since then. Hopefully some others will reply and give you some advice.

For what it's worth, I watched my mother go through a splenectomy 16 months ago, and so far she hasn't shown any change in her tendency to get sick or her recovery rate when she does get sick. Have you brought this issue up with your treating physician? Immune function is complex, as I'm sure you know, and everything from nutritional status to lifestyle, including having small children as a means for transmitting lots of disease, can play a role. Perhaps there's something that can be tweaked.

There are other disorders that can lower the immune system response. You might ask your doctor to check into it. Splenectomy shouldn't cause a person to get sick more often. It can cause an illness to become serious (sepsis) very quickly. Some people with ITP also CVID...that might be one thing to start looking at.

Hi there sorry you haven't been well.
I was thoroughly fed up of catching everything and feeling rubbish.
I've started on 2g of Shiitake mushroom extract a day for the past 2 weeks and i can honestly say i feel better, more alert and my memory seems to have improved.
I had to personally deal with people with colds recently and did not catch them.
I'm a skeptic of vitamins but Shiitake has some studies to back it up where it was shown they boosted the immune system by doubling Nkc Natural killer cells and Other antibodies.
The study is here www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25866155
I'd be interested to see if you have similar good results.
Swanson do a 500mg extract that is reasonably priced here in the uk.
I'm thinking of buying the dried mushrooms to cook to get a better dose.
