ITP triggered by Depo?

Any info is appreciated:

I was diagnosed with ITP about 3 years ago and it has been pretty steady between 55-80 thousand. I found out about my condition after bleeding on depo for 8 months straight, every day. I ended up switching Gynos because I felt something was not right after continuous bleeding for such a long period of time. I know that it takes a few rounds of depo for your body to get regulated periods or none at all but this was different. My new Gyno immediately took me off and ordered blood tests. Then I found out about my ITP. I had a negative bone marrow biopsy as well.

I often wonder if my condition was triggered by the depo shots since I can't remember ever having abnormal bleeds or bruising prior to depo. Does anyone have similar experiences?

The only thing I can tell you is that any drug has the potential to trigger ITP. It is difficult to make the connection with certainty though, and even if you could, knowing probably wouldn't change anything. Some of us feel that ITP was triggered by a certain drug, mostly antibiotics, but there isn't much anyone can do about it.

I have not heard Depo mentioned before as a possible trigger. Some people over the years (including me) have used it as a method of controlling monthly bleeding until counts rose.

Did you start using Depo as a form of BC?

I tried it as a form of birth control and was told by the new physician that it's for people with higher body fats. That's when I switched to the nuvaring. I'm not taking anything to up my counts and haven't before in the past. Whatever the case, I just think that maybe the depo shot just wasn't for me but I'm glad I found out about ITP because of it.
