Does getting sunburned, from a slight sunburn to all over your body, cause platelets to drop?

  • ITP since 2014. Retired nurse. My belief is empower patients to be involved as much as possible in their care. Read, read, read & ALWAYS question medics about the evidence base they use.

This is interesting. Sunburn in this patient didn't cause platelet count to drop but did cause petechiae. May go some way to explaining why some of us have petechiae at higher platelet counts.

When my daughter had ITP as a teenager, even a slight overexposure to sun caused platelets to drop. I think sun exposure is implicated in flares of other autoimmune disorders.

I think it possibly can in some individuals who are predisposed to certain other autoimmune disorders. People with ITP should be careful in the sun since ITP can be the first symptom of connective tissue disorders and the sun can trigger them.

I've explored this issue, since I get rashes, including small reddish purple spots, when exposed to sunlight. A dermatologist diagnosed this as a separate autoimmune disorder, but that was before anything regarded platelets came about. My hematologist thinks my photosensitivity and platelet counts are unrelated. On the other hand, it's been rather warm and sunny in the past week where I live, and I've found quite a number of small spots (maybe petechiae, maybe just a rash from sun exposure) on my arms, legs, and even a couple on my neck and face.

I've also wondered about connective tissue disorders. Between photosensitivity, multiple joint problems, and low platelets, I am at times suspicious of what my immune system gets up to.

Better to be safe than sorry. I wasn't careful and that was one huge mistake.
