This article was from January this year so assuming this may not be new to everyone. I searched and did not find it posted so I thought I would post.

Scientists discover a new blood platelet formation mechanism

Summary:
A new cellular mechanism, called the endocycle, encourages the formation of platelets, the cells needed to coagulate blood. In mouse models, endocycles can help to control thrombocytopenia, a disease caused by a deficit in platelet production that causes heavy haemorrhaging. The new process could act as an alternative source of platelets when the normal mechanisms fail.

Hmmm. I wonder if it also applies to ITP?

Me too Sandy as deficient platelet production is only one possible cause of ITP. My ITP for example is caused by excessive platelet destruction

Indium scan showed splenic destruction of platelets & bone marrow biopsy proved platelet production fine..in fact on overtime producing extra platelets attempting to make up for deficit. Hence my opting to enrol on the fostamatininb trial.

I thought there was some new way to discover production vs destruction.

I read my own biopsy results & watched my indium scan therefore know how rapidly my platelets are being destroyed. I believe them

I believe the Indium as far as destruction, I'm not questioning that. It's just that the bone marrow biopsy results do not prove that production is adequate even though that is a common belief. We've all shown adequate production results based on the number of megakaryocytes, but it is a misconception discovered in the past few years. Few doctors know this. Dr. Provan does, he's a good one to ask.
