Normal platelet count but easy bruises after ITP

My daughter was diagnosed with ITP back in August 2013. Her platelet count went back to normal in 3 months and has been remained normal since then. Her recent blood test showed a platelet count of 315k. What's abnormal is that she has been having bruises on her legs all the time. Usually two or three bruise spots. It took some days for the bruises to disappear, but they will appear again. In the past several months, the bruises began to show up on her arms, and even belly.

I am really concerned and do not know what is wrong. Anyone has seen the same symptom? Any explanation? Thanks a lot!

Andrea.... I am exactly the same, platelet count has been hanging around 110 for four years and I cannot remember the last time I didn't have a bruise...and they can be anywhere, stomach, arms, legs. Don't know the reason for this.

Hi, Milly, thank you for the reply. Is it possible that there is chronic ITP with normal platelet count? Four months ago, I took my daughter to see the doctor about it. The doctor told me not to worry since her blood test was fine. But I feel it is getting worse. The bruises were exclusively on her legs for more than a year, then they started to show on her arms, belly, even finger. And she also seems to get easy skin cuts on her fingers.

Will she ever grow out of it? What is it about...

Dr tells me the same thing, I know it's not from bumping myself, I am in my 50's so I would remember if I bumped myself. There are some pretty smart folks on here, I am sure someone will come on with an idea of why this happens. The bruises don't hurt, there is no pain even if I push on them.
How old is your daughter, is she a little tot that could be bumping into things?

Andrea:

A diagnosis of ITP is mainly based on platelet count, so one does not have ITP or symptoms of it if they maintain normal counts with no treatment.

There are platelet function disorders that you could look into. Those disorders affect how well the platelets function. Does she have small yellow ones or are they large and black? If they are just small and light colored, I wouldn't worry about it.

My daughter used to bruise on her legs in the same spots and we couldn't figure out why. I finally realized that she had an exercise in dance class where she grabbed those exact spots often and those areas bruised all the time for that reason. Maybe something like that is happening and she's just not aware of it.

She is seven now. Yes, I also agree that the bruises are not from the bumps because I keep an eye on her bruises all the time, and I can tell there is no particular pattern for them to show up. Most of the time it's just 2 or 3 spots on her legs, then they disappear, then they reappear from a different place on her shins and knees.

Hi, Sandi, her bruises are of brown, and then become reddish before they fade away. She has had several blueish ones on the back of her upper legs and her belly. The size of the bruises is not large, usually the size of a thumbnail or two of it. What concerns me is that the bruises keeps popping up, never stops. She is an active kid and also takes dance class. But I suspect the bruises are not from her activities, especially when they show on her arms and belly.

I am going to take her to the doctor for platelet dysfunction. But I am afraid I will come back with the same answer of nothing to worry about...

If she gets tested and her platelet function tests are normal, it probably is nothing to worry about.
