Can anyone out there recommend a hematologist in the Atlanta area that specializes in ITP? I am currently going to a dr. that is primarily an oncologist and while I am sure he is knowledgable, his primary concern is his cancer patients. Any suggestions?

Most hematologists are oncologists and one that deals primarily with hematology can be hard to find. They do exist though. There are many good hematologists that also see cancer patients, so maybe somebody here can at least recommend someone like that for you. Some hematologist/oncologists have a lot of knowledge about ITP. on the other hand, many of us end up educating our doctors.

I can't help with a recommendation, but I can offer the method I used to find an ITP specialist in my area.

I went to the website of the leading research hospital here. In the "patient" area of the site, you can search the area of expertise you need - "hematologist" - and it lists all the MDs on staff with that specialty. From there, you can click on each name to see the area of expertise, whether they research, see patients, have won awards. Some of the hemas areas of interest are in pediatrics, some in particular cancers, some in sickle cell disease. There were only one or two listed for 'clotting disorders'. I chose one of them to see.

For you, I went to Emory U's site to see what I could find in Atlanta. This is an example of what I found in a short search there. There isn't any way to assess personality, treatment methods, etc., of course. But it's a place to start.

I think there are other med schools in Atlanta, aren't there? Check them all.
Good luck to you!

Hey, msbongi, we are in the Atlanta area as well, and use Emory Clinic for almost all of our medical care. It is helpful to have almost everything under one roof, and the charts all on one computer. The doctors actually communicate with each other. Ellen once got a call from her internist following up on something that showed up on tests run by another specialist.

Ellen sees Dr. Arellano for hematology, and we are happy with her. Yes, she is in oncology, but she does have other ITP patients, and we have her well trained in ITP  and she doesn't freak out over low counts. She doesn't like to use prednisone, but prefers dex pulses when needed, based on the research that she has read. That would be a dealbreaker for some people on this site!

Amber, "amberyard" is also in Atlanta, I think maybe in the northwest. I don't know who she sees, but at one point she was using Northside Hospital. You might private message her and see if she has any recommendations. you can message her from here:

Feel free to pm me as well.

What part of town are you in? We are near Decatur, in Avondale.
