Possible Deep Vein Thrombosis

Possible Deep Vein Thrombosis was created by Rob16
Getting ready to take Ellen to the Emergency Room with swelling in one calf and ankle that won't go away. Suspect possible deep vein thrombosis resulting from a fall she took last week... at least need to rule it out. The problem of course is the usual anticoagulant treatment would be complicated by platelets around 20, so this may end up as a hospital stay.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Prayers as well!

Oh Rob, as soon as I saw this I felt sick. My only advice, make sure those ER docs are thorough and know what they are doing. Some don't believe clots are possible with low counts. Insist on a Hematologist, and find out why she'd clot with low counts (APS?). It can be tricky. Let me know!

Does it hurt? Is it red?

Swollen, red, warm, and sore.
In the ER waiting for bloodwork and ultrasound before seeing md.
Will definitely follow your advice and insist on hema if we don't like the answers we get.

Finally saw ER doc at 5:00 am. No sign of DVT on ultrasound, but doc said it was a valid concern. Platelets are at a new low of 11k. ER doc thinks the swelling is related to the low platelets. Ellen's hematologist was consulted and she prescribed high dose dexamethasone pulse.

I don't remember hearing of swelling as a symptom of low platelets except with bruising.

Well that's good! Did they do a D-Dimer?

The only reason I can think of for swelling would be if the blood pooled or if there was a hematoma, but you'd think it would be bruised in that case. Very strange.

Sending thoughts and Prayers!

Glad to hear they ruled out a clot! Here's hoping the treatment boost the numbers up to a more livable level!

Hi Rob,

I've had experience with DVT as i have a Lupus antogen, which may be factorthat led to my heart attack in'04 . over the years my treatment has been Quarterly checkups with specialists ,
blood labs every 2-3 weeks to check ( pt/in,cbc) so as to regulate my thinners and also platelets,

they also put filter in when i was in surgery to gaurd against clot moving to organs.
as for the swelling ? i experienced a fall and leg bleeds twice, had same symptoms ,
could only be ademia ? compression stockings helped me!
I'm 56 , and though I can no longer work F/T, have been recovering nicely since my last Lupus
flareup, even starting to exercise again after 20 years!
I go fishing regularly for peace of mind,
THANKS
SUPERDAVE
