My hematologist said, "Something that doesn't have aspirin in it." How do I know what has aspirin in it?

It would be on the label of the product. It might say 'salicylates' instead of aspirin. Aspirin does not lower counts, but can thin the blood, so best to avoid if counts are low.

Thanks, I did not know that meant aspirin. My count today was 290,000 down from 306,000 but I guess that is not too significant. Still, it is down. I start on straight 10's today then. The doctor said that if I was at 250,000 I should go on straight ten's.

I take Claritin [the generic versions I buy at Costco] 2x a day and do from February to about October. Know another ITPer who takes it also.

And it does not affect your counts, I assume? I am afraid to put anything in my mouth!

I have taken allergy medication for over 30 years prescription and over the counter. Zyrtec is what I take now and I am please to say it helps a lot!!! and it has not affected my platelets (right now my counts are between 35k and 55K on no medication). I also like that I don't get the "medicine head" feeling with Zyrtec :)

Good luck,
Cindy Ann

I take Zyrtec also. It has never affected my platelet counts. Your counts are great, there really is not a difference between 306k and 290k. :)

I take Zyrtec as well with no problem. The only two things my hema said to avoid are aspirins/ ibuprofen and SSRI drugs.
