I'm 30 years old and I have ITP since october 2012 and now my platelets are ok without corticosteroid. Does anyone knows if there's any risk with vaccination? What about H1N1 vaccine? Thanks!

There is always a risk that counts can drop with a vaccine. It's happened. On the other hand, there is also a risk that counts will drop if you get the illness that you're vaccinating against. Coin toss.

I always get a flu shot and have never had a problem, but I've decided to hold off on tetanus boosters. You'll find a wide variety of approaches here. In general I've heard that dead virus should not cause problems but live virus could.

Dealing with vaccines is always tricky and I'm very careful about them now.

I am pretty sure I developed ITP after a set of vaccines against different tropical diseases before a trip to South America as my first blood test following the vaccines showed plateles of 20k. Then again, as Sandi mentioned a numeber of times before, I must have had some propensity to develop ITP in the first place. My husband had the exact same vaccines done and he's been fine.

We all wish we knew what tirggers platelets drops or increases but there are no definite answers.

I hope your counts stay up for a long time!

Ania

I usually avoid all vaccines, but not because of ITP. I did have a rusty nail go into my arm last year and had to get the tetanus. I was fine. You never know what will stir things up.

Sandi, it seems difficult to deal with a balance of "pros" and "against" where the both sides can drop our platelets...

Eklein, I think that the the booster might increase the probability of reactive ITP. But that's just my opinion...

Hi Anian, thank you, I wish that too. I look to the future with all the memories of my first episode, with a lot of caution and some fear... thank u =]

gamma globulin injection in 1989, triggered ITP
flu shots starting in 1992, no problems yet
tetanus booster in 1992, no problem
tetanus booster in 2002, tanked my count
pneumonia immunization, no problem

I do avoid live immunizations - haven't had the shingles vaccine, I would love to get it but it's live.

Ania you and your husband are like me and my husband. His company required us to have a gamma globulin injection before we could move overseas [Tokyo for heavens sake]. I developed ITP very very shortly after that injection - my husband did just fine.

Diego:

It is difficult to balance the pros and cons, but that's the way it is. It's all based on benefit vs risk. Luckily, this is one decision that isn't all that difficult. It gets harder if there comes a time when you have to balance two different medical issues forever and one conflicts with the other.

There is also a chance that your counts will not drop from either the vaccine or the H1N1 flu. Does that phrasing make it easier? Good luck!

We are all different I suppose. I was diagnosed around 10 years ago.
I have gotten a flu vaccine every year for the past 6 or 7 years. Platelet count was unaffected.
I had H1N1 three years ago (prior to getting the vaccine). It did not affect my platelet count.

Hi well I have had the h1n1 vaccine but this was three years ago while I was not experiencing any drops in platelets . So it was during a period when I was unaffected by low platelets. Got the vaccine, no problems except I felt exhausted that night along with bad pain in the area where I got the vaccine. Apparently a lot of people got that soreness in the arm but nothing terrible. Still think I got a flu regardless tho it's hard to tell if I hadn't got it if the vaccine could have been worse. Problem is u can never tell which is better? To get it or not to as you won't be able to compare, in my opinion speak with a doc and voice your concerns and see if he recommends it. Hope it helps :) :) :)

I received an h1n1 vaccine in September. It left the worst bruise I had ever seen but since it said there could be redness or bruising at injection site I didn't think anything of it. I don't think it caused my itp but it was definitely the first sign that I had it.
