i was wondering if anyone has any experience with this issue. i havent had a cbc in about 2 years but it was 7 at the time. i've never treated. i'm also diabetic and i seem to notice an increase in eye floaters, which may be a sign of a retinal tear. it usually requires laser surgery. does anyone know if you need an increase in platelet count for leye aser surgery?

thanks

First, if you're worried about the floaters, you should have an ophthalmologist check your eyes to make sure you don't have a retinal tear. Floaters are lots more common than retinal tears though, so the odds are on your side.

When I had cataract surgery in January, my ophthalmologist told me he wasn't at all worried about low platelet counts. He said there wouldn't be any bleeding, and there wasn't.

thank you karen,
i am making an appointment with an opthomologst. i know people who have lots of floaters and dont have tears, but i'm a doom and gloom person and cant help it. i always think the worst. thats why i havent treated this stupid itp, i picture the worst scenario of side effects. i hoping the platelet count doesnt matter. i know one common method of repairing a tear is freezing, and i'm thinking platelets shouldnt matter for that.

thanks

You should have it checked even if you're not a gloom and doom person. I think any of us would do that, Freckles. Nice to see you!

I don't have ITP but I have had numerous eye surgeries including laser surgeries for retinal tears. I'm sorry to say this, but I hated laser surgery. It was worse than going under the knife because I couldn't STAND the bright light that they kept shining into my eye. My retinal specialist kept telling me to hold still and I kept moving. They finally had to put a "belt" around my head around the machine to keep me from pulling back. I was crying and I've never felt like such a wimp! I don't think there is really any bleeding involved, but for the surgeries where you go under, there is alot of bleeding involved. I've had a scleral buckle put around each eye after laser surgery failed to fix the tear and the retina was being detached.

Floaters are common, but you do need to get them checked. I have them still, but I have to just ignore them because everything is fine with my eyes now. The main symptom for a retina that is becoming detached is flashing light when there is none and seeing a "curtain" of black out of part of your eye. (Eyes look normal.) I was lucky that it was caught in time so that I didn't have permanent blindness. On webmd (I think that's what it is called) there is an eye forum that you can post on to see if you can get some answers on there.

well, i made an appointment for wednesday at the mass eye and ear, so i'll let you know how it goes. just for the fun of it, some people have written about how anxiety brings about an acute ability to see floaters. i believe it. as an "expert" on anxiety, i can tell you it can make you experience anything, weather its really there or not.
