My husband has had ITP and diabetes for 28 years. The ITP was discovered when he had blood work done with the onset of diabetes. He has always been on insulin. At first he was treated with high dosages of prednisone for the ITP, bet his platelet count fell when the prednisone was gradually cut back so he finally had his spleen removed. That helped the ItP for quite a while, but through the years his platelet count dropped so he finally wnet on Nplate. After 3 years of that, he started having severe side effects so now he's back on prednisone again. He's had pretty good control of his blood sugar through the years. He's now alsmot 79 years old.

I don't know that ITP causes diabetes, it just happened that his was discovered at the same time.

I believe that prednisone can either cause or make worse diabetes. So it isn't the itp, it's the treatment.

Morwood, it seems from what I remember that you have been on prednisone for an awfully long time. That's not a good idea and most haematologists won't allow us to use it for more than a few months.

Here are the guidelines listing all the other drugs. If your doctor won't try any of them then you really need to get a second opinion.

To confirm what Erica wrote, I had steroid-induced diabetes that required insulin injections. After a splenectomy and remission, I am off the prednisone and the diabetes has been reversed -
