had bone marrow biopsy today.... was created by ddunn
Hey everyone,

I had my bone marrow biopsy today that i was dreading. I also had a CT scan.
She put me in a twilight type sleep........i could still hear her talking, but really didnt care!!! I didnt feel a thing...except the shot she gave me to numb the area.

I was out.....and so thankful i couldnt feel a thing.
Thanks, Natalie....for all your encouragement.....

I feel a lot better, knowing that is all over, now just worried about the results...U know...u always think the worse!!!!!

For once, haha, it paid to be "chunky" or as she called me, "hippy". She said she wanted to to the biopsy in the hosp, becasue she could give me more drugs.....so it wouldnt hurt to penetrate my fat hip...LOL.
so i got more than just the numbing stuff around the area, i got an IV, and was down for the count.
I am glad it is over!

Glad to hear it went well. I had my BMB on Sept 12, 2001, if you can imagine. I was grateful to be able to have a BMB. The worst part was waiting for the results, and then the hema was 45 minutes late to my appt to tell me everything was fine and I only had ITP. Talk about a loooonnnng 45 minutes trying to distract myself with an 18 month old Woman's Day magazine (can this marriage be saved??).

I am so happy for you that your BMB went so well! That is great! I told you not to worry! Thankfully, I didn't have to wait long for my results because I was staying in the hospital, so my hemo was on rounds and decided to go and check on the marrow herself. What great news I learned when she came back. Honestly, the worst is over. Now, relax, eat some good food, watch your favorite movie and chill for a little while. Everything will be fine! Let us know what you find out!

I'm so glad all went well! Mine was done in the hospital before my MD called in a hematologist - later I told my wonderful hematologist what a horrible experience the biopsy was and she said if she had done it I wouldn't have had a bad time. And knowing her, no I wouldn't have had a bad time.

Do let us know when the results come in - I have a feeling all is well! :)

Glad you got it done and you didn't know much. Sounds like you got the same stuff as me to sedate you i couldnt have done it without it!
The heama checked my marrow virtually as soon as it was taken to be on the safe side, she said she made the trip to see it especially and it was fine. I think when the consultant takes it they must look at it under the scope and they can probably tell by looking at it. I think if it had of been lukemia the results would come straight back to start a different treatment. You will be fine!

whew! I'm glad it's over for you. See...it wasn't as bad as you thought it was gonna be! Drugs will help that! Any idea how long a wait for the results? Mine was 2 weeks and one day. I just betcha it's gonna be ok!

Really? The wait was that long? I had mine done and had the results in a few hours! My hema went and checked it out. But, I was also in the hospital...so maybe they did rushed to do it? Hmmm....interesting.

I hope everything goes alright with the results, good luck with it. Glad to hear it didn't hurt. The last two i had i was put right under and not just given a local, but if everything goes well with the Nplate and i continue it for a while, i have to have another BMB done in a year to make sure there is no fibrosis of the bone marrow.

Dear ddunn,

I had the bone marrow test and I was given amild drug to relax me. Then I was given a local(shot)It felt a little pinchy but my Hematologist was great every step of the way. It usally only takes a few day for the results to come back. Hang in there Im sure you will be just fine! Smile God is watching over you!

I found out yesterday i have to have a bone marrow biopsy on wednesday next week cause my hematologist said my white cell pattern looks funny or something and the nplate was starting to work and since i went into hospital with the vomiting and dehydration they have been getting lower again. They were 13 on friday just gone and 11 the week before and around 18 and 19 the couple of weeks before that, so he wants to have a look to see if there is any reason why my white cell's look that way. I'm a bit nervous, but he said he would put me under sedation if i prefer which i think i do prefer that to a local. Not the news i wanted to hear, i thought the biopsy wouldn't bee talked about for a year at least.

I had a BMB without sedation. It was fine. Not something I'd want to do every day but I would think that, for me anyway, sedation would have been totally over the top, and I was glad just to be able to get up off the bed afterwards and walk away with no sedation to wear off.

I'm not saying you shouldn't have sedation but I do think it's important to let others reading this know that really it isn't nearly as bad as its reputation.

I'm with Ann. Hopped up on the table and hopped off 20 minutes later - no sedation. It was not a traumatic event.

Good luck, Angel. I hope your results turn out fine~

I'm with Ann and Sandi. I wouldn't say it didn't hurt, but it's nothing that I couldn't handle. Much, much better than waiting for some medication to wear off. It really isn't that bad.

I ended up having the sedation, I just don't think I could have been able to keep myself still enough, and although I am used to needles ( I have a blood test and nplate injection every week) I was still a bit nervous and anxious about this, so i didn't feel a thing while it happened, but I am sure feeling it now. I don't know how they say normal panadol will take tha pain away cause I am using panadine with extra codeine and it is only just taking the edge off and I can't sleep or lean in my right side cause it's too painful at the moment. Hope the pain doesn't last too long and I was up about an hour or an hour and a half after it, so I didn't have to be there too long after it
