  • I was diagnosed at just three years old and have lived with ITP for 26 years. Doctors have often referred to me as the "exotic one" because they believe my case and experience with ITP differs from most. I am married and have a beautiful baby boy.

Hi There!

I have had ITP for about 20 years, I was diagnosed when I was three. My time with ITP has been unusual to say the least, I have really bad experiences and great ones. For the past 3 years I can happily say that my experience has been that of great. I have had no complications with my ITP during the past 3 years, my count has been stable at around 100 with no treatment!
Last week I got the flu and it was a decent dose of the flu, I am still sick! I went in and got my count checked as I had noticed some red dots and large bruises that appeared under the skin on my legs. My count was 40 which in comparison to 100 isn't that great - but still decent.
It wasn't until I had gotten home that I noticed the bruises that appeared under the skin on my legs were in fact veins. I began to search my body and noticed that on my legs my veins were very apparent and seemed as though they were on the surface. The veins on my legs that I thought were bruises appear really large and basically look like huge big dark blue bruises - they don't look like stringy, linear type veins. I have never had this issue with my veins before and am starting to think that maybe the veins becoming apparent has something to do with my platelet drop.
Has anyone experienced anything like this? Or am I trying to make a connection between two things that are just not related?

Many thanks,
C.

I tend to get veins popping up on my legs occassionally, I have had it happen both when my counts are higher and lower, so i don't know if it does have anything to do with ITP or not. I don't worry about it too much. I just have to look carefully sometimes to make sure if it is a vein or a bruise.

I've had that too.The veins on my legs become dark and visible and sometimes the area is tender to the touch.

Silverplume you might want to start a new thread about your veins.

I cannot imagine that bulging, painful veins in ones arm is the result of ITP - but I'm not in the medical field so I don't know.

What does your PCP say? If you are having that problem have you seen your PCP?

Good luck!

Silverplume,

Please google <deep vein thrombosis arm> and see if the symptoms match. People with ITP are (paradoxically) prone to blood clots, and they can occur in the arm.
