Hello --
I've been wondering if it's safe to take fish oil/omega3? It seems that most "heart healthy" things are in actuality blood thinners. Thanks for your help.

You'll need to consult with a doctor about your particular situation. I wouldn't take anything that thins the blood with a count less than ~75K. I don't have any of the risk factors for clotting.

I agree, check with your doctor but mine said stay away from any concentrated doses of fish oil ie: supplements.

I tried Omega3 Children's Gummy Fish Vitamins for joint pain. They contained 281mg from flaxseed and fish, plus ALA 68, DHA 32mg.

My counts were similar to yours at the time, around 20K. I got bruises on my arms, legs and blood in my nose. I don't bruise or bleed much so it was surprising and concerning. Took me about a week to figure it might be the vitamins. I stopped taking them and bleeding symptoms stopped. Haven't had a problem since.

What I understand is that the Omega 3 takes the stickiness off the platelets, so counts may stay the same but platelets aren't working. I learned my lesson- hey I need what few platelets I have to be in top working condition!

I've mentioned this before in other threads, but a few years ago, I asked Dr. Bussel at the ITP summer conference if there were any supplements I, as a fairly typical ITP patient, should avoid (I mentioned glucosamine-chondritin, vitamins C&D, calcium, Omega-3 ), and he said the only one of those I should avoid was Omega-3.
