Safe antiflammatories? was created by debbied
Since I'm holding off a double knee replacement as long as I can, I am exploring medication options. I have a prescription for Vicodin but I really hate taking a narcotic. I heard Celebrex is safe especially if counts are over 100,000 as mine have been but my hematologist is still leery. Any input would be helpful, thanks everyone.

I've been taking Celebrex for years for inflammation. While most people are limited, my prescribing doctor allows me to take 300mg a day and 400 as needed. I am going through a really difficult time with my back right now and I don't know what I would do without it. I know it has dangers but so does Tylenol. When I get inflammation, it does not go away easily and I've learned to use only ice. Good luck! I guess I would get the knee done raising platelets in any way possible. I had back surgery this summer. I did two days of IVIG and then the surgery with no problems, except that theykept me in the hospital overnight instead of going home as most people do.

  • Diagnosed in 2000, at 59, after being on moderately high doses of NSAIDs for arthritis. Splenectomy and rituxan both failed (2004). Did well on prednisone till summer 2018--then terrible reactions. Promacta since 11-19.

ULtram (Tramadol) is a narcotic, but not on the same order as codeine. It is the only painkiller (besides Tylenol) that I can take. It is not an anti-inflammatory, of course, and I usually limit myself to taking it at night--and take just half a 50-mg pill. But when I had my knee replaced, I took a lot of it--up to the limit, I think. It didn't make me sick (the way codeine/codone do), and I didn't feel altered by it or addicted to it.
