low platelets wanted to remove spleen was created by porqupine
went to new hemo my heart doc sent me to cause my count was at 18. i asked him why im so tired all the time .he said it had nothing to do with itp . so i told him i was not like this before my heart attack.that they had me on plavix,cumadin,heprin. could it have been those drugs that gave me itp he said no way that i had it before heart attack. i dont think so iwould have noticed the bruses. i told him that im registerd to this site and it has taugh me alot. he wanted to remove my spleen i said no way that im 51 and it would not work but thanks anyway.what a waste of time. he said he would medicate me at leveles of 10 to 20 i told him i have been at 11 for almost 5 years with no medication just fatigue all the time. i will never go again.i think it was the drugs that gave me itp

I get so mad about these doctor stories! They speak like they are super authorities but this one obviously knew very little and was giving you bad information and uninformed advice. I hope you can find a better doctor who is more informed about itp.

I wonder how he knows you had it before your Heart attack? Did someone do a blood test before your attack, and if yes how come no one mentioned it! I could accept they had more urgent issues to deal with at the time. Certainly possible you had ITP but perhaps not low enough to bruise. I don't tend to spontaneously bruise with low platelets unless I hit/bump something which isn't often. My recent episode I was 10-20 with no bruises. Regardless of that, there are definitely other Rx options I suggest you consider. I had my first Rituxan Rx @ age 58 - and yes I meditated long and hard before accepting it due to possible bad side affects.

2nd opinion and 2nd MD definitely. There are better options in my opinion.

Hi

You mentioned that a splenectomy wouldn't work because you're 51. I would just point out that I had my spleen removed 4.5 weeks ago - and I'm 52. My understanding is that, while the chances of a effective outcome is better if one is under 40, it is still hopeful at our age.

To summarize my long recent post, my platelets were bottoming out for a good month. We used Nplate to get the numbers high enough for a laproscopic splenectomy - my numbers normal or above normal since - so far- of course we dont know what the next bloodwork will bring, but I am optimisitic.

And of course you need to decide for yourself - my only point is that I would not simply decide that a splenectomy would not help because of your age.
