11 years no success until now! was created by jason17
I have severe refractory itp. My numbers are usually sub 10k. I have done just about everything until recently, when I had a pulmonary embolism due to an adverse reaction to IG, which shot my numbers over 1 million. I was given a anti-coagulent and a steroid I have never taken called decadron. I took the decadron for approximately three months in pulse doses and now I have had normal numbers for four months without having to take anything. I have gotten used to living with itp, and treatments that dont work, my hemo says that there have been cases where decadron has caused extended periods of remission. So i dont know what to think, other than be thankful for where i am today. Numbers today..389k!!!

Do you still take the decadron? I have been on Prednisone and had all the bad side effects but it does make my counts come up, just wondering if maybe a different steroid might work for me!!

Julie read about it here - this site I go to quite often to check out medications

Yikes Jason, over a million? Bless your heart, glad you are doing well after the pulmonary embolism! And congratulations on a good count, hope it stays there [and no higher]!

Thank you for the kind words! No I am not currently on anything and its been 4 months..prednisone had no positive effect on me, just the bad ones. Decadron had similar side affects but it made my numbers jump up, and because I took it in pulse doses, (approx every other week,) the side affects werent as bad overall. ITP has been a rollercoaster ride, that I just have to deal with.

Decadron can go either way for an ITP patient. Either they get a sustained response, or counts tank as soon as the drug is stopped. Good luck to you; I'm surprised it wasn't suggested before this.
