What does it mean when they cant get a reading due to blood clotting? It has only happened once before. They just sad they will redo it tmw since she has a rheumatology appt but I know it will be a different reading than usual bec we give her the shot tonight. I dont know the "life span" of Nplate, like if it goes up immediately then drops or it takes a few days to work. What bugs me is that this tech really dug into her for the blood and then after, no reading. :(

Pauline:

Did they send the sample out or do an instant count? If they sent the sample out, I wouldn't worry about it. That's happened to me many times...the blood just does what's supposed to do and clots in the tube.

If they did an instant count and couldn't get a reading, that's a different story.

They almost always do an instant count. We lefr after the blood draw so it us very possible that they let it sit. One other time, it clotted even after an instant count. They did not seem concerned and redrew her blood. It ended up being low that time but Im confident her count is still normal. Glad that is prob all it is (letting it sit too long). Whew!

Yeah, they may have let it sit. I wouldn't worry about it (unless they tell you to).

I usually get an instant count in my doctors office, and still occasionally have what my hematologist calls a "clumping" problem.

The platelets stick together, and the machine can't count those properly, or it may count a small "clump" as 1 platelet, thus giving a lower count than actual.

When this happens, they can do a slide, and count the platelets the "old fashioned" way. (Some younger technicians may not even know how to do that!)

If the problem is consistent, and / or cannot be done instantly, then the doctor can instruct the lab to use a special tube (can't remember the name) that contains an anti-clotting material.

I've had that special tube (EDTA?) and it didn't work any better than the regular tube...I still clumped. I had to switch to instant counts and haven't had a problem since. Funny how different we all are.

Since she's on the study, they always do a manual count. Plus they make sure everything else looks ok since she has had reticulin in her bone marrow. Today's count was 95. We just gave her the shot late last night so they said to watch for symptoms in case that was her peak for this week. Maybe that tiny bit of the drug really does do the job.

I was told last August that my blood conjealed. I found it fairly hard to believe too like you. They sent me back round but didn't make me wait again etc.

I just presume it is kind of posh for the blood drying up in the test tube for whatever reason. In all of my time it has only happend the once and yes I don't really know what it means but heard it said to other people at times when waiting.
