Latest count and a question?

Latest count and a question? was created by iam4ual
Hello everyone! I hope everyone is having an amazing week! I went to the hema and my counts were 170000! They were 179000 2 months ago but that is still normal. Have not had Dex since the begining of May. :P

My question is really 2! How much can platelets fluctuate from day to day, week to week, month to month? Should I even entertain the idea that they dropped 9000 in 2 months?

Does it mean that I am in remission since my numbers are normal and I am not on medication? Also, how likely is it that my numbers could hold right where they are?

So I know that I loaded everyone down with questions but I just love love love this sight and knowing that you have been where I am:lol: I love knowing that you guys speak from living it not from reading it in a medical book!
Love to all<

Hey Shannon - I'm glad to hear that you are holding steady!

Answers: Platelets can fluctuate 9,000 or more in the same day. Heck, they can fluctuate that much even if you had two blood draws within an hour. I wouldn't be in the least concerned with that.

Remission used to mean normal counts with no treatment for a year. Then it became 6 months. Now, a person is in remission if they can maintain normal counts without treatment and the time period doesn't matter much. You are there. Partial remission is being able to maintain lower than normal counts without treatment.

As for how likely it is that counts will hold, there is no answer for that. I could tell you, oh a year, but would that be right? No, it's just a guess. Counts tend to do what they want to do. It could be a week or it could be a lifetime. All you can do is enjoy what you have and forget about it. Just live.

Sandi, I just love you girl!!! You always shoot it straight and I always feel better when I hear from you! I am living though....in fact my 3 beautiful children, my wonderful hubby and I are going to the beach in a few days and we will be gone for 10 days...I figure 10 days of ocean and beach and seafood is enough to do any person's health good LOL..

Thank you for your answer! And because of you and this sight I did not give in and remove my spleen, Now my platelets are normal and I am believing for a long time. I just refuse to take out body parts! If it were up to my dr my spleen would have come out in February.

Thank you!

I'm glad you're so happy! It sounds like you have a great week coming up - the beach is my favorite!

Yes, I shoot it straight, sometimes too straight, but I yam what I yam!

I don't want to throw any spanner into the happy works but all I do know is that when the current heamatologist took over from the retired one he used to make the point quite clear at clinic. Just because I had a blood test that afternoon and the count was very good. If I suspected anything of a drop by evening then give them a ring. In other words he knew they can drop very quick (as they can rise equally as quick I think). Thankfully it has never happend to me but it did reassure me that if it does happen they would understand. though I think some nurses don't because back at Boxing day when I went in, at the beginning one nurse was saying, I had a blood test that month (totally different reason else where). As luck would have it they were down to 8 where as the time before they were healthy range 200+

So yes it is possible that you have a blood test and they be okay and in a few hours they could drop and you get all the outward signs that tell you to ring up. I hope that you never experience that though because it probably feeling embarrasing etc though rest assured it perfectly natural etc
