Enlarged lymph node

Enlarged lymph node was created by Lindy
I have an enlarged lymph node on the right side of my neck.
Went to see my doctor & platelet count plunged by 50k, my 'normal' is 90-100k.
Doctor said its probably due to viral infection.
Sent me home & ask me to come back in 2 weeks time for another blood count.
Is this normal?

Not sure what you mean by 'is this normal'?

which part are you asking if it's normal? I believe it is normal to have an enlarged lymph node with an infection. And I believe it is appropriate for your doc to have you come back in 2 weeks for another check up.

It's also normal for the count to go down with an infection. So all seems pretty normal. Hope you're better soon.

Sorry for not being clear.
Is it normal for platelet count to plunge with an infection?
Strange thing is I do not have a sore throat or fever.
Just pain on the right side of my neck & a tender enlarged lymph node below my jaw/ear.
Unable to have proper sleep, all the while feeling something stuck on my neck.

Thanks all for your replies.

Yes, it's normal for counts to go down during an infection or virus. Most of the time, they rebound on their own.

Maybe you've got mumps. A node that's tender is caused by infection. A node that is enlarged but not tender is more worrying and would need investigation.

I get swollen lymph nodes when I have any kind of irritation, could be a mosquito bite I scratched to an upset gut - I've had glands that stayed swollen for years. One doctor would measure and make sure it wasn't growing. When I was on prednisone they all went back to normal.

An update - last week had CBC done.
Platelet count has edged up to 80 & lymph nodes have reduced in size.
So I am quite thankful.

However, this week I have developed gum ulcers on both sides of my mouth.
Its really painful!
Is it common to get such painful gum ulcers when one's immunity is down?
Has anyone experience this? What would be the best treatment? Thanks.

Are you on steroids? I found steroids gave me awful gum soreness along with sensitive teeth.

Great news on the Platelets and Lymph Nodes :)
About the gum sores, are the like sores or blisters? You know that blood blisters is a symptom of ITP.

@Sandi, I had a viral infection according to the doctor so I guess my immunity is down:unsure:

@server, its like ulcers & also some part of the gum feels like bulging.

Yesterday I was having bad bad headaches...couldn't use the computer.:(
Today still having them but not as bad as yesterday.
Boy, what a lousy September.

@Ann, I am not on steroids. My hematologist doesn't want to start any treatment even when my count was 50. Still watch & wait mode.
