Does anyone know if the vaccinations associated with splenectomy can decrease your platelet counts.. it got reduced from 107K to 40K for my wife.. and we are not sure if these vaccinations can be the cause.

Also, if it does, does anyone know based on personal experience or knowledge if it gets better or requires medications to bump it up?

Vaccinations can do that as the body makes antibodies to the diseases the vaccinations are given for, it might encourage it to make more antibodies against the platelets. Whether it goes back up or not is an individual thing so nobody can say. 40 is an okay count for the moment though although they want to bring it up for the splenectomy.

Yes, it can cause a drop - anything can. It's also possible that the counts would have dropped anyway for no apparent reason. Impossible to know if the counts will rebound without treatment.

Do you mean by "splenectomy vaccination" the pneumonia vaccine? I don't remember any other vaccinations.

My husband had many vaccinations before splenectomy and count stayed about the same. Usually around 30. He had hepatic, pneumonia, flu, meningitis and Heb(?) shots. His counts went up after surgery and are 250 now 5 years later.

I have been diagnosed with ITP since 2006 and had my spleen removed last week. Now my platelets are going crazy - they were 986 when I left the hospital on Wednesday - 1,600 when I had my labs done Friday so the dr started me on Lovenox injections once a day - went today to have my labs done again and now I'm 2,200 - so he increased my shots to twice a day.

Anyone know how high your platelets can go and is there a "oh crap" number that if you reach additional treatment should be sought - I've never had to deal with high platelets as I am sure most others on this forum are in the same boat, but any information would be helpful.

Usually over a million is cause for concern unless someone has a high risk for clotting...then that number is much lower.
