So here is the deal, I have played volleyball my entire life, I even went and played all four years in college. This past March I was diagnosed with ITP and was told that volleyball was too dangerous for me to play. I'm a very stubborn person who really hates being told what not to do.

This weekend is my high school alumni match and it might seem like a little thing, but I've never played in it before because I've always had a college game the same day. I had my blood checked on monday and I'm at 74,000 (I had IVIG done almost 2 months ago). What is a safe number to be able to play a little pick-me-up volleyball?

That's a good count but if you get bonked hard in the head it could be a problem at that count. It could happen even in a friendly game.

You are in my thoughts. Am lucky that I don't play sport and haven't had to give anything up but when you are keen on something and get warned about it..

It is a good count but yes, as said if you get knocked on the head by a passing arm or ball then may be a different story. I hope someone can give you some real advice what to do next and I hope your team is okay about you needing a bit of time out. It may be in a month or so you'll be okay again and never have another episode but wouldn't want to build up your hopes too much for them to be dashed. But don't want to paint a be all and end all picture either.

Advice from my sports mad son's consultant

Above 30K, anything apart from rugby, boxing and trampolining

Above 70K, anything.

I guess it all depends on your bleeding threshold (my son has very few symptoms until he gets into single digits), but I would think that at 70K you would be pretty safe to play the odd game of volleyball.

I agree with Alisonp- a little pick me up volleyball should be fine. Just be careful and make sure you know your body.

Thank you all! I ended up playing, but only played front row in fear of getting hit in the head. I didn't realize how much I missed the sport, it was funny watching me try and walk the rest of the weekend because I was so sore
