Has anyone heard or had this prior to or during surgery? I am having a total knee replacement 5 weeks from tomorrow and had a meeting with an anesthesiologist today at my local hospital. He mentioned possibly using it at the time of my surgery. I see my hematologist tomorrow and I'm supposed to ask him about it and other things regarding the surgery. I did some research but was wondering if anyone has some personal experience regarding it. It supposedly helps platelets circulate through out the body rather than having them hanging around the spleen (and other spots).

Diagnosed with ITP 9/14/1980, the day oldest son was born, & it continued through the births of my other 2 sons and continues now! No treatments until March 2011 when I had a TKR and my count decided to plunge. Sons now almost 25-30. My spleen's still with me.

To reply to myself, I saw my hematologist this morning who said no to the DDAVP. I'm to see him a week before the surgery, and, if necessary, he'll put me on a short course of prednisone if my count is less than 75,000. It was 76,000 today.

Today's appointment was made before I even decided I needed the surgery, so it worked out very well time-wise! Now I just hope my count cooperates a week before the surgery and on the day of surgery so I don't have to 1) have prednisone, and, 2) postpone surgery-or, more likely, have the general anesthesia rather than the spinal which is preferred for this surgery because it offers very good pain management immediately after the surgery.
