Yes it can be! I had thyroid issues and when I first got my thyroid addressed (ablated) my counts went up. But after a while (couple months at most) they dropped again. Some people have more lasting remissions. If you have thyroid problems you should for sure deal with them. Maybe you'll get platelet improvements too.

Yes and no - same as everything else.

I'm like Erica with the thyroid - but taking care of the problem never made my count go up or down. However my hematologist and endocrinologist did not want me taking anti-thyroid meds because they do/can/might/will lower ones platelet count. We did have a lady here a few years back, she came because her husband had Graves Disease and once he started anti-thyroid meds his platelet count hit the gutter. He was not an ITPer to start with. She never came back to tell us how he did or what happened.

I know people with thyroid issues who don't have ITP.

Erica is right - if one, ITP or not, has a thyroid problem it does need to be addressed and resolved.

Protocol states that a person should be checked for thyroid problems prior to having a splenectomy for ITP. They can be related in that a person with Graves/Hashimotos can have ITP and vice versa. As Melinda said, treating one may not resolve the other.

Having one autoimmune disorder can place a person at risk for others.

I had my thyroid issues long before I ever got my ITP. I've been on Levothyroxin for more years than I can remember. At ITP diagnosis, I was taken off all my meds, but it didn't go away. Right now, my thyroid numbers are normal.

I too have had thyroid issues, but mine was neither over active or under active just enlarged and because of the size and the fact that it was cutting off my windpipe I had to have all my thyroid removed and so now am on thyroxine forever. I don't think it had an impact on platelets.

The problem was found about 5 months after I got ITP. I do know though that I wish I had got a second opinion as to if the whole gland needed to be removed as getting thyroid meds at the right level is really hard I am always either hypothyroid or hyperthyroid. I should have fought harder as medication cannot do the same job as a human body can do.

Milly, my mom had that. The dr. told her that her thyroid gland had wrapped itself around her windpipe. That was in the 1960's. They took her thyroid gland out and for some reason, gave her radiation. She was on a thyroid pill for the rest of her life. She also complained that because of the radiation she couldn't wear earrings any more. I never understood that part.

Ananta, this is the second time for me I also had a large growth removed about thirty years ago.
How is your mum tsh,t3 and t4 levels, it is very complicated get all these levels right. I didn't have any radiation treatment but I have heard of that before unsure of the reason, might have to google it and find out.

I also had a parathyroid tumour removed when I had my thyroid removed.
