enlarged liver/spleen was created by volleyball11
My daughter saw her hemotologist last week and during her exam he noticed that her liver and her spleen seems to be enlarged. He told us to follow up with her gastrologist and get everything checked. Her platelets have been in the sixties the past few months and she feels sick after she eats. Any help would be great. thanks

:( That doesn't sound fun... poor thing. And it's horrible not knowing what's going on. Hope you find some answers really soon. I'm new to the ITP world, so don't have a lot of info to offer I'm sorry. But the liver and spleen are definately 2 very important organs... so I hope u get some treatment soon.

Keep in touch!

While it's not really common it does happen. The spleen is a big spongy filtering organ that traps the "bad" things (or the good things that have antibodies attached that it thinks are bad). Occassionally it will enlarge if it's trapping too much. My hemo has me lay down and feels my spleen at every appointment.

Rather than ITP, my sister has a myloprolific blood disorder of the bone marrow and hers enlarged until it became necessary to remove it (they were afraid she would bend over and lift something and burst it). Now the disclaimer, she has always been outside of what they consider "normal" so don't panic with this information, it's likely it won't apply for your daughter. They did monitor her for several years before making the decision and she had tons of tests to determine what was going on.

As the spleen enlarges it may need extra space and may press against the stomach or the pancreas. In my sister's case, just before the surgery she could only eat a few bites before beginning to feel full, then she'd be hungry again in an hour or so. If your daughter continues to have issues, you may want to ask the doctor about an utlrasound or MRI image.
