ITP that doesn't ever require treatment? was created by lilynavasmom
I have recently been diagnosed with ITP but so far have not required any steroid treatment. It was first found on a routine CBC that was ordered before a surgical procedure a few months ago, and I have not had any symptoms at all. The lowest my platelets have been on a test is 46. On my most recent blood work last week I am back up to 75. A year ago when my first low platelet count was noticed it was at 97 (although the ER doc did not tell us and we just recently found out the results were abnormal when my Hematologist requested the records). It seems I bounce around but never seem to drop low enough that I have to have treatment. I'm just wondering if it is possible to have this happen and never end up in the "danger zone" as my doc calls it. Anyone else have this experience? My Hematologist says it is possible but I'm wondering how common it really is.

@lily,

I was diagnosed in 2009 & platelet count has been hovering around 90 for 2 years.
I do get unexplained bruising. No treatment yet in 'watch & wait' mode.
Hope your count remain outside the "danger zone" for a long time.

Lily - yes, it's very possible to stay above treatment level. An illness or medication could bring them down, but you may rebound on your own. I'm not sure how common it is, probably more than we know since most people don't find out unless they have a CBC for some reason.

I hovered at the 50K mark for close to 15 years before I dropped and had to treat. Since then I've been doing Winrho every 8-12 weeks. I making it a bit longer between each treatment, so I'm in hopes that I'm stabalizing back to my "norn".

Hi
I have had ITP for the last 16 years and usually required treatment. though last august it dropped and ended up innocently in A&E because I didn't feel right and they discovered it was 37.... I didn't have any symptoms as you say - just didn't feel right. If I had been aware of ITP that moment I wouldn't have bothered A&E but gone to heamatologist department. They were called up etc and last summer did do a watch and wait I think its termed - though for me, that lasted till December when they finally dropped to 7..... and given treatment.
But what am saying that yes it is usual that you could be at 45 and needing no treatment and dont have any visible symptoms.
Ps
I wouldn't recommend going to A&E on a "don't feel right" principle but 2006 I had septicemia and left me overreactive to the slightest bodily changes and yes am dealing with things more properly this year but well I wasn't in too much trouble with A&E as it turned out since platelet count dropped and suddenly 'exciting' for them for a brief second I think.
Hope that is reassuring and hope you learn more whilst here;) Take care
