Tonic Water?? was created by tdecker
Has anyone heard the theory that tonic water, specifically quinine, may be a cause of ITP? I love tonic water and I had heard this, but am now getting heck from my mother-in-law for drinking it in fancy non-alcoholic drinks so I cannot have a nice glass of wine now.

Yes, it's possible to be sensitive to quinine and it can cause low platelets. It doesn't affect everyone that way, but it's worth considering.

Definitely. There are some people who develop antibodies against platelets due to quinine. That doesn't mean you have them, but you don't know for sure.

I have ITP (in remission) and take a drug that has quinine in it. It has not affected my counts at all.

Traci, I think the best solution here is to just stop hanging out with your mother-in-law.

I searched for papers on it when I was diagnosed and it seems that those who are sensitive to quinine will have an immediate drop in platelets which will also immediately recover when the quinine is out of the system. It's rare and didn't have any effect on my counts.
