Yes, unfortunately, weight gain is normal with steroids. It causes water retention, as well as increased appetite (big time). It might get worse before it gets better. As a person tapers, the water weight drops off, but it can take some time. Prednisone can also cause a 'moon face', which is not actual weight but redistribution of fat in the face.

There are ways to keep weight gain to a minimum: avoid salt, avoid sugar, exercise (walking, etc), stay active.

Sandi,

Thank You for the speedie reply ~ ~ ~

The diet change should not be big a "thang", however, exercise, may be, as Mom had back surgery, the three lower vertebrae fused together with Stainless steel plates and screws, and the the two vertebrae above those were "cemented" all of this in the last two years. so Mom has limited mobility, must use a walker when walking, standing etc.

Again Thanks

Yes, exercise can be a problem with older folks. Diet can help, as I said cutting back on salt and sugar and possibly eating low calorie for a while. Hopefully, she has the guidance of her doctor who can direct her with that.

Yes Yes Yes... I struggle with my weight because of prednisone. I stay active and watch what I eat... but I still get the puffy face and abdomen because of the drug. Its a steroid and it causes you to have the munchies. Maybe you can find something low impact for her regarding exercise. I feel bad because the weight gain isn't fun... so uncomfortable.
