Future knee replacement

Future knee replacement was created by debbied
I am needing bilateral knee replacement sometime in the near future. I was trying to wait until I could go on Medicare at age 65( 7 more years) but my ortho says I'll never make it until then. I am employed as a Medical Assistant for a small office primarily for getting health insurance through my employer. I know if I take off two months ( the amount of time my ortho says I will be off work for recuperation) my employer will replace me and thus I will lose my health insurance. My ortho and hemo are also encouraging me to do it soon since my platelets are now at 71,000 and that is high for me.
Has anyone else been in this position and what did they do? Any input is appreciated.
Thanks

Debbie

Debbie:

I am sort of in that situation. I have two surgeries that I should have (don't need yet but will eventually), and can't do for the same reason. I don't know any way around it. FMLA won't work because my office is too small. I need my insurance and my salary. I get seven sick days a year and that won't do it.

I'm no help, just wanted you to know you're not alone.

Would you be able to continue your insurance for a while with COBRA? I don't know if small employers have to offer that or not. How many employees are there, are they large enough to be covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act?

If only there was some sort of government program that helped people get and keep health insurance.

I can, in Florida get what they call mini-cobra, which is for small offices from 2-9 employees. It is expensive, you pay the whole amount plus about 25% more. But that would be an option. It is a decision to make when to do it. Thanks all who replied for letting me know I am not alone.
