Clotting Disorder

Clotting Disorder was created by heidio
Hi all. I recently posted how I just had a miscarriage on April 1st. I met with my OB today and she is trying to rule out a clotting disorder. I have tested negative the past two tests for Anti-Phos-Anti Syn (APAS). She thinks there may be a clotting disorder causing my miscarriages. I have had ITP for about 4 years. I have had one positive test for APAS in the past 3 years. My question is: are there any meds I can take instead of baby aspirin to help me if I do have a clotting disorder-one that won't bring my plat. count down? Anyone dealt with this? How badly does baby aspirin mess up our platelets?
Thanks so much!

I'm sorry to hear about your miscarriages. That must be tough.

I have had APS antibodies also. I tested positive a few times for Anticardiolipin Antibodies and also tested negative a few times. The Antibodies can come and go. The safest route if you have not had a clot is aspirin. I've been on aspirin for a few years and it has not affected my platelet count at all. Aspirin usually doesn't...it thins the blood but does not affect the count. I am only supposed to stop taking it if my counts go under 50, which they haven't.

I've read a few articles that actually stated that the body may compensate for APS by lowering the platelets on purpose, thereby avoiding a clot. Since the clotting can be more serious than ITP, I would actually rather have counts between 50 and 150.

Do you know which antibody you tested positive for? There are three.

Sandi-
Thank you for your compassion.

It is encouraging to know that aspirin is ok. Is there a smaller amount than "baby" aspirin? Are you on "baby" aspirin?

In Feb 2009, my coagulation was:
ANTI-B2GP1 IGM 35.7
Anti -B2GP1 IGA 20.3
Phosphatid IGG 16.4
Phosphatid IGM 6.1

Cardiolipin IGG 17.9
Cardiolipin IGA 4.0
Cardiolipin IGM 9.5

Does that help? Which three should I focus on?

Without the reference ranges, I don't know what those results mean. I can decipher a lot of blood work results, but this isn't one of them. There are three antibodies:

1. Anticardiolipin antibodies (IgG, IgM, and IgA)

2.Lupus anticoagulant – a panel of blood clotting tests that may include the dilute Russel Viper venom time (dRVVT), lupus aPTT, mixing studies, and hex phase phospholipid test, platelet neutralization procedure

3.Antibodies to b2-glycoprotein I (IgG, IgM, IgA)

The worst one to have is the Lupus Anticoagulant.

Here is a good web site to read about it:

www.apsfa.org/aps.htm

There isn't anything that I'm aware of that is lower dose than baby aspirin, but that is what is recommended. Yes, I do take it. 89 mg's a day.
