ITP and Elite Athletics was created by vze3jvch@verizon.net
My 19 yr old son was diagnosed with ITP in June 2010. His count has fluctuated since between 15k and 50K. He is an elite long distance runner and it seems that the doctors we seen have no idea how the disease affects his ability to perform or train. When his count drops they suggest he slow down training but really seem to have no idea. Does anyone have experience with ITP and elite athletics and maybe recomend a doctor with a bit more knowledge.

hi,

i was a pro soccer player many years ago now however i was still very active training uaually 2+ hrs per day up untill i was diagnosed with itp in january this year with counts usually under 5 all i do now is walk at a moderate pace 3-6 miles per day i am 34 and have 3 kids im obviously different from your son as he is on the way up and im very much on the way down and training is very important to him ,but i truly believe giving your body a chance to recover especilly with low counts has to be much safer than pounding it ,at his age im sure he will not lose to much with skipping training at these times ,i'd rather be less fit and safe . Hope all goes well

Thanks very much for your post. I agree that when counts are low fatigue seems an issue. I also agree that health is the most important thing and he cannot lose his scholarship due to the ITP. The one question I have is that when counts are low could he reduce intensity of training and maintain volume. If he can do that impact on his athletic performace will be minimal. However, if he must decrease both volume and intensity of training that would have a huge impact.

I think if he has no symptoms of bleeding before during or after training and if he uses heart rate to gauge his levels of fatigue in the same way and listens to what his body is telling him especially when his counts are low he probably should be ok as teenagers recover super fast from training but as i said before its far more important to be safe than superfit but i understand at his age the drive and dreams he will have .But im no doctor or specialist and we have no way of knowing whats going on inside our bodies your son will be the only one who can honestly tell you how he is feeling when training or racing ,if his performance was to decline and he was not missing, decreasing intensity or volume of training i would defo take a step back and rest .
