question on bone marrow results. was created by shen08
Just got results in post as I requested a copy of what was being sent to my gp. it says on one letter reactive bone marrow changes with numerous megakryocytes. Google doesnt seem to stretch this far. as I would have just assumed that as the doc told me the bone marrow results point at ITP that the results being sent to gp would just state normal as the result. followed by throwing a splenectomy up in the air if counts were still low after the year mark.

I love your statement 'google doesn't stretch this far'.

I'm sorry I don't know the answer to your questions.

Megakryocytes are immature platelet cells. Having "numerous" means they were able to see your bone marrow is clearly producing platelets (as opposed to producing none or very little) based on numerous immature platelets being present. This is a common comment when the decision is made that ITP is the issue. There have been many dicussions on this board about ITP being a disease of both destruction and low/lack of production. But for you, at this point, they're just saying your bone marrow is producing platelets. Numerous can mean anything from enough to some so your doctor will have to ask the lab doc what he actually saw otherwise. What this statement doesn't address is if those megakryocytes are actually maturing into usable platelets. They should see them in all phases of development so if they didn't I think they would have stated so.

sorry Sandi yea I had read it, it was the result of reactive changes. Was at gp today she said it was to do with inflammation so just tryin to see what that might mean outside of infection.
