I have not heard of someone needing blood because of ITP. I suppose if someone is actively bleeding (it would have to be pretty bad which would be life threatening) one could need a blood transfusion. I know it wasn't uncommon for our boy's RBC's to be a TAD low or high as his body bounced around but nothing significant enough to require blood.

However, I can tell you that low RBC's and hemoblogin AND having low platelets can be indicative of myelodysplastic syndrome. If your doctors think you have that they would very likely do a bone marrow biopsy to determine if that's the case. It's fairly uncommon to do a BMB for ITP but an absolute necessity to do one to determine if someone has MDS. Certainly something you should address with your hematologist. ITP is a vastly different dog from MDS.

Well, if there is significant bleeding that affected the hemoglobin, then yes, needing blood is possible.

Low hemoglobin in the absence of that can indicate another problem, such as Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia, low B-12, Evans Syndrome or any number of other disorders. What does your doctor say?

Low hemoglobin can also be a symptom for PNH. It's a bone marrow disease that often requires blood transfusions due to hemolysing. It can also cause low platelets and WBC. I was just diagnosed with it last october

I have hemolytic anemia and ITP and one time low platelets hit at the right time of the month and everything came crashing down. I had no choice but to get a blood transfusion as my hemoglobin was 7 from the blood loss and the low platelets made the blood loss worse. I was so weak and sick. Anyway, it brought up my hemoglobin for a couple of weeks, and the NPlate brought up my platelets, but my hemolytic anemia went wild from the transfusion.

It was one heck of a spring for me. *Shudders* I've had ITP since I was 24 and that was the first time my low counts coincided with that time of the month. I joked to my gyn that I thought I was going to bleed to death and she got serious and said it could've gotten really ugly - no joke!

I also had to have a transfusion (3units) due to excessive bleeding during my monthly that actually lasted a month.
