I've had ITP for over a decade and I've recently run into a problem at the labs my doctor sends me to. I have large platelets but from what I understand they may be even larger than normal for people with ITP. I can't have a "machine count" done or it will say I have 5,000 platelets when I really have 45,000.
Here's the problem, places like labcorp and quest are now looking at my doctor's lab order saying "we don't do manual counts anymore". Apparently they do something else like an estimate. Of course I'm thinking well what were you doing before because I seriously doubt anyone was counting up to 40,000.
I'd like to know the actual lab's name for a manual/estimate platelet count because I'm now without insurance and would like to order my own platelet counts through a legitimate company I've found. If you've had any kind of chronic medical issue you know that knowledge is power and I'd rather get the answer from one of you on here if possible. I've spent the weekend in the hospital several times now because the lab tech put my blood through the machine even though I told people they have to visually count the platelets. I'm thinking an exact lab name will help me prevent this.
Thank you!!!

That's funny, "I seriously doubt anyone was counting up to 40,000' - made me laugh!

I think what they do is count one little segment, like they divide the slide into little areas and count one and then multiple. Not sure where I got that idea, looking forward to the real answer - Erica

And she was!

I have Kaiser, and the lab does both a machine and a manual count for me. Often my platelets are described on the manual count as "large." Once they were described as "giant"! But the manual count has, it seems, always confirmed the machine count. That means at least one lab can do fairly accurate machine counts even if one has large platelets. Of course YOUR platelets may be humongous!

I've only ever heard it called "manual" vs "automated".
