What is the lowest count you will go without seeking treatment (keeping in mind your symptoms and all). I don't panic a lot at 15 when I have no bleeding symptoms. Anything under 15, I get somewhat nervous

I knew my count was 11 and still went sailing. *shrug* Everyone's different. Unless I'm bleeding out everywhere (which doesn't happen for me), I won't treat. I go with what my body tells me, not with what a piece of paper says.
That's my take! :)

Bubba boy was zero for 3 months and we did no treatment (prior to h-pathy). We called the hemo once when prednisone made him bleed out of every orifice (still at zero). Once we pulled the pred. he was still zero but stopped bleeding.

thankfully it is a decision that I fully trust my heamatology team with. Usually I develope a rash etc when the count is under ten and they have always treated me as an inpatient at that. It wouldn't occur to me to say, hang on, and lets do wait and see..... I wouldn't be there if I didn't want treating is the way I figure it out and the only way I know to know my blood count is to be tested there....

For me the question would be at what signs do I react - of which I have been learning over the last 16 years and will go on learning. When there are just bruises it seems like my count is high enough. When I have the rash and the blood blisters - I ring up and go through and yes they do the test and keep me in.

I like the English system because I know that I could ring up now if I felt the platelets are down and if argued enough I could go through and be tested and be reassured they are up or kept in if they are down enough.

For me the decision is in the hand of the team and not me thankfully! One less thing to make a decision on:)

I haven't had to think about it for a while now (since remission), but I used to begin treatment at 10 to 15. These days I'm told to stay above 50 because I take daily aspirin.

Hi Sandy -
I thought Aspirin is a blood thinner. Do your platelets get very high now that you are in remission? I remember one of my previous hematologists telling me that after splenectomy if the platelets got too high, then the patient is put on Aspirin daily. Just curious

It is a blood thinner. I take it because I have APS antibodies (which some people with ITP do have) and they can cause clots. I also take it because I am at risk for heart disease (atherosclerosis) due to Lupus, I have high blood pressure, and have had a strange thing show up on an EKG which suggests a prior heart attack.
