Low Platelets & Symptoms

Low Platelets & Symptoms was created by vega
Hello to All,
Recently my platelet count dipped to 18 (an all-time low) after years of an average of 40-70. I was really surprised since there were no indicators of this, like any kind of oversable bleeding, increased bruising ...
My question is about how common it is not to show any evidence of lowered platelets. Or, is this typical????
Thank you, vega

When I crashed in 2002 I had no symptoms at all - what took me in for a platelet count was just a feeling my count was down.

What is typical about ITP is that it is not typical.

Hope your count comes back up!

can you imagine how much money someone would get it they could figure out how this silly disorder works?!
for me, I am learning that when my counts are getting low, below 30 I get more fatigued. not so much with the bruising. When my counts are a little higher, 40-70ish I get more bruising and petechiae. I don't get it.

Everyone is different. Some people have symptoms at higher counts and some do not have symptoms at lower counts. There are a lot of variables.

Hi
I only know for sure when my platelets are 10 or under... then have the rash and some bruising and gums bleed sometimes slight sometimes definately.

August last year I went to A&E because fed up of not feeling quite right etc with blurred vision at times. Naturally they did the standard routine bloodtest and with a long story cut very short my count was 35.

I went to Hallamshire Hospital Ward Boxing day to be met by one doctor who was convinced it was ITP, just waiting for the result to come back and another doctor who bluntly asked me what made me come today because in truth the rash was minimum but increasing over Christmas eve and Christmas Day of which I had blood blisters too, one very big bruise and my gums bleed for while after brusing. But I can understand him for being a little bit blunt.... and he gave his apology when
result came back as 7. The doctor in my favour from the start rewarded me with a "I did very well to come in"! Because the symptoms truelly were minimum but there.... The next day they dropped down to 3.... with increase bleeding which would have sent me there anyways. Really should have rang up Christmas Day in the evening but who wants to do that if not necessairly but glad I didn't because they may have dropped but not low enough for them to take me in.... which for that doctor who was blunt = I couldn't help but be somewhat smug when I was told they were 7. Just proves I hadn't wasted anyone's time on Boxing Day!!!

So signs and symptoms vary for us all I think and that is what is soooo dangerous. The blurred vision by the way turned out to be migrane but had everyone worried for a while with brain bleeds etc....

I know to respond when I see the rash
