Sandi posted this a while back so I'll repost it:

Also, search the boards yourself - I'm sure I've seen really specific info about ITP and getting on disability - it's a high criteria, you need to have a brain bleed or some other pretty intense issue.

Hi
Am not American so wouldn't know how the system works for you but in UK
I don't think anyone has for ITP alone.

I also know that in UK the disability form is completed by you based on your own experiences. So one does not go on because of the disease/dissorder they have. They go on (supposedly) how it personally affects them so potentially one could be on for ITP if it affected you every day. Eg you find it difficult getting to anywhere (and work) and find it difficult doings things about the home because the dissorder was making you so ill. That is UK off course as we have social welfare system.

But it could help you decide whether you need disability living allowance as we call it :-)

The Social Security guidelines for qualifying set the bar pretty high.

You could get short term disability if your company offered it or if you had a private disability policy. Other than that, there isn't anything available.

The bad thing about long term disability is that you have to be off of work for a year before you can apply. Then you have to prove that you qualify. It's a difficult process.

It's different here in Canada. I didn't have to have a brain bleed nor be off work for a year to get my acceptance into long term disability. My doctor filled out a form and so did I. I did wait 6 months before being notified that I was being accepted. But every country must be different in criteria.

All you can do is apply for like i have commented on, it is how it personally affects you not what you have necessarily. If you are finding it very difficult to go to the loo on your own, walk 20 paces on your own,(and breathless at that distance, feed yourself, turn over in bed etc then apply for it because you are clearly needing the extra help to help you get by. Or you need someone to tell you that you need to get washed now because you are too depressed to wash etc then apply:-)

If you are in hospital for for that length of time like I was the very first time I had to notify the benefits agency as was unable to sign on (and unfit for work with simply being in hospital)and I did receive the equivilance for that period alone. But not just because it was ITP.

It really is about how you are personally affected. What you are like as regards living independently. Whether you can do those basic tasks, like walking 20 paces, going to the loo, cooking a basic meal etc.

If you really want to try to apply for it then do so. Just tell the truth and if you are given it even temporarily then that is okay for you. It is not illegal to fill in the form and send it off if you are being truethful!

In california you can get state short term disablity. It pays up to 1 yr with a doctors certification. The pay isnt a lot about 2/3 of your income and based on what you have paid into it. Ive been disability each time I did treatment and got it granted each time. There is a form that your doctor has to fill out every so oftern to continue your disability. Im not sure how New york would work but ask your doctors office. They will know what you need to do.
