Flying over a certain amount of hours

I have been diagnosed with ITP for 7 years now with my CBC count ranging from 32,000 to 50,000. I have flown several times but no more than 6 hours on a flight . Is it okay to fly more than 6 hours with an ITP count under 50,000 ? I have heard from some doctors that the length of your flight does affect your CBC count and then others say it should be fine.

Has anyone else flown more than 6 hours with low platelet counts?

Doctor advice seems to vary widely about flying. A few years ago someone posted that their doctor explained that the air pressure in the cabin caused problems with small blood vessels in the ears. That was the most rational sounding explanation of the issues that I've seen. You should ask your doctor what they think. I flew with counts in the 30s-50s from Minneapolis to the Bahamas and I was fine. But your mileage may vary.

  • Diagnosed in 2000, at 59, after being on moderately high doses of NSAIDs for arthritis. Splenectomy and rituxan both failed (2004). Did well on prednisone till summer 2018--then terrible reactions. Promacta since 11-19.

I've never noticed any change in platelets that I could attribute to short or long air flights. My hema knew I was flying to and from New Zealand in 2009, and he didn't express any concern for those 12-14-hour flights.
