I had my baby! Update

Hi everyone,

I was posting a few weeks back about the various things my doctors and I were doing to get my count up before I delivered. I ended up trying prednisone (didn't work) and IVIG. Thankfully the IVIG worked great and my counts ended up in the 300s-400s when I delivered! My son was born on December 3 and we are both doing great. His platelet count when they checked in the hospital was a little on the low side of the normal range (140-160) but he is otherwise very healthy.

Today at his two week appointment the doctor repeated a CBC just to check and his count was down to 109. I know this is a perfectly safe count (and double what mine usually is!) but I can't help but be a little more nervous about my little guy. The pediatrician is not concerned but does want to make sure that his count does not continue going down and starts going up again. We are doing another CBC on Monday and Thursday of next week just to keep an eye on it and see what's going on. I hate having to see him get his heal stuck! Hopefully my anti-platelet antibodies that are apparently still hanging out in his bloodstream will die off soon, and we will be done with this.

Also - two weeks after IVIG my count was 211, so that's good. I will be getting monthly CBCs for the next two months just to see where my platelets stabilize.

Thanks again for all of the support when I posted towards the end of my pregnancy. I'll keep you updated on how my son is doing, too!

My son's name is Ezra Simon. He was born at 11:48am on Friday, December 3, weighing 8lbs 14oz.

On Monday his platelet count was 155, so things are looking good! In the pediatrics practice we go to, one of the doctors is both a general pediatrician and a pediatric hem/onc, so I spoke with her and she said that my antibodies can stay in his system for up to twelve weeks but by about now his bone marrow should be counteracting this by producing more platelets. So far it looks like everything is working the way it should be. We have to do one more CBC tomorrow and if his platelets are in the normal range again, we are done with CBCs! I don't like having to take him to get a heal stick, but it is good to know that his doctors are keeping a close eye on him to make sure everything is okay with my little guy!

Liz congratulations!! Ezra is beautiful [and this comes from the proud grandmother of a 20 month old]. So glad all went well and all continues to go well!

Liz, congratulations! Your baby is so beautiful! It sounds like he is going to be fine. You look great for just having a baby And, I can see the baby takes after is mother, too.
