IGIV and dental surgery was created by rooshik
Hello All,

My age is 26 and I have a chronic ITP. In the initial period I was given steroids and that kept working good for me. I discontinued treatment somehow in the mid years as I was healthy and fit but in last year I found that my tooth(molars) are badly decayed so when I met my dentist he said we need to extract and replace it. at this time my platelet count was fluctuating from 10-35 thousand. He suggested to meet Hematologist for increase in the count for the dental surgery. My hemato suggested me going for IVIG 10% new drug to increase the count.
When I read about IVIG - there listed lots of side effects and risks. I am not sure about it since this is my first time to IVIG.
Are there folks who successful through such a surgery after IVIG? What could I do to reduce IVIG side effects? Are IVIG side effects are severe? in such cases.

Thanks.

My personal experience with IVIG (and everyone is differnt) is that my only side effect is a headache someitmes for several days afterwards. My counts usually raise for about 4 weeks after IVIG then fall again, but I really haven't found any drug that gets my counts higher (IVIG actually gets me into the 100k range). I also use it before surgery and am fact scheduled for 2 days of 10% IVIG tomorrow and friday to raise my counts prior to splenectomy on Tuesday.
Overall everyone is different but I find IVIG far perferable to steroids or rituxan, it's not cheap though so make sure your insurance will foot the bill.

Ive used IVIG so many times I couldnt even count. The only side effect ive ever had is headaches. But if I premedicate with benedryl, steriods and tynoel and there is usually no problem. it usually only raises my counts for 2 weeks 3 max and then i drop back down. But it gets the job done. I was suppose to get IVIG prior to getting my wisdom teeth out (in 27 this was 3 yrs ago) and my hmo insurance denied the IVIG. Needless to say I ended up getting my IVIG 2 days after getting my teeth pulled. IVIG is painless but takes a while to infuse in.

Thanks barrelgal and tigereyes. I am thru with ivig -suffered headache and little nausea.
counts are not as high as I was expecting. After one day it went up to 30thousand from 10t  , Lets see.
Are there different type of IVIGs? if yes, How to make sure which one is suitable? I have all the tests done from CBC with diff, DRVVT,LEcell,Lupus anti, smear and so.

Rooshik, for me it sometimes takes 3 days to get the platelet count jump from IVIG so don't give up on it yet. There are different mfg of the stuff and I know some people on the board have more luck with one 'brand' over another, but I don't think I've reacted any differently to the 2 different brands that I've had. Some people are more sensative to things like that. Glad you got at least a little bump so far!

Waiting for reports to come, cbc done few minutes ago. I am hoping for the best, and not afraid of counts, they may be...whatever. In low count case I would probably search for alternatives, but le me ask - Are there good alternatives? any other IVIG perhaps.

Hay Jenifer, How much was your count when tooth is pulled? Have you used external clotting drugs?
My dentist say we can use external clotters but since this tooth is major one, he is afraid of internal bleeding from the vein inside.
