Teen daughter with ITP was created by loriann4
My 13 year old daughter was seen and placed in the hospital on Aug. 3rd due to Platelets being 2,000. Up until this point I had never heard of ITP. She also had Severe Anemia at the time. The ITP was treated with a 12 hour IV/IG and the Anemia with 2 Iron Transfusions. Her platelets went up to 363,000 before leaving the hospital and on the 17th of Aug were at 65,000. We go again tomorrow to have labs done.
My question: Why is she so exhausted and she gets headaches/sore throats now almost constantly even though her throat is never irritated/red when the docs look. Up until last Friday the docs told us Fatigue was not a part of ITP so I did my own research and found out it is. Needless to say they all received a phone call from me. Does anyone have anymore insight about ITP. The docs say they are "leaning" towards ITP but, will not give us a 100% diagnosis yet. What does that even mean? Looking for answers... :)

ITP is a diagnosis of exclusion, meaning there isn't one specific test they can run to confirm if it is ITP and instead they will have to rule out other possibilities. In our daughter's case, they did several blood tests and a bone marrow biopsy before they would officially label her diagnosis as ITP.

We also had a hard time getting docs to agree that the fatigue and mood swings are related to ITP, but we do believe it's all connected. Good luck to your family. These boards have a wealth of information and are a great place to just be able to discuss what's going on.

Hi
Tiredness is something alot of ITP'ers get. Certainly if she is anaemic at the same time tiredness is a factor there too, especially lathergic tiredness which I have had when been really anaemic. (Though the docs knew that once platelets rose the iron would rise and they were right for me). The British ITP support association carried out a questionnaire the other year and tiredness was something everyone reported back on! Sometimes when my platelets drop I have aneaemia and they have treated it with full blood transfusions.

Like your daughter I too get the sore throats and when general doctors look they cannot see anything as I have recently posted in general discussions - THROAT. All this summer my throat has felt swollen on and off throughtout the days and my count had dropped to 10 (English way of writing it - am english)and rose to 37 in the same evening which isn't my normal pattern. But yes I experience the same as your daughter with the throat. I find it comfortable to eat but so painfully swollen at times I given in and taken Paracetamol.

Headaches could be tiredness related. Tiredness is most apart of ITP though arguable about Fatigue and could be other things happening.
