Hi everyone,

My 21-year-old nephew is now in the hospital. Thursday his count was 16k, today it is 11k. They plan on doing IVIG tomorrow because they expect them to drop under 10k. They have been running all kinds of tests on him, and started him on prednisone. So far all of the tests has been unremarkable. They mentioned doing a bone marrow biopsy, hopefully the infusion therapy will bring his platelets up high enough that they can do that. It looks like we will be watching the fireworks from the hospital window.

My platelets are still in normal range, but the doctors have decided to continue prednisone and Imuran because of my lupus. They tried me on methotrexate but I couldn't tolerate it. One of the doctors that works for the cancer center and frequents my office called those medications the "big guns". To think about it, they really are.

Rhonda, I am so sorry about your nephew.
There is another line of postings on here in which Gort talks about how difficult ITP is for the relatives of the patients. I've been thinking about that since I read it and it really is so true.
Crossing my fingers that he will respond well to the IVIG.

Good news, his count is 77k today, prednisone is working so they are not going to do the infusion. They are going to get him theraputic for coumadin, and release him. I am headed to the hospital, from his room, he can't see the fireworks, and since I work there, I can get him into an area where he can see them. Have a good night everyone.

My nephew has passed away yesterday. It is so sad, he was so young. He had an accident, so it wasn't related to ITP, but the low platelets did not help the situation.
